Welcome on the forum, Phil!
Are you French speaking (Quebec is, isn't it?) ?
There is a French speaking forum too (link here : Forum FFL-ASL)

My main difficulty has been to find available face-to-face players.
Have you tried VASL?
It is a not too bad substitute to FtF, if one uses a vocal device (Skype, Teamspeak, etc.) rather than the chat line (though nothing replaces a real encounter).

Don't hesitate to interfere in the threads, and to ask questions in the "Rules and errata" subforum : this place is made alive by the contribution of every one.

Cheers

New (SK) player

Hi, this is Carlos, a Spaniard who has been introduced to ASLSK a few months back. I'm above 40, have two daughters that have already left home and I work half time only. These circumstances have allowed my to retake my olf wargaming hobby, in particular my cherised SL-CoI-CoD games. Some months back a colleague introduced me to ASLSK. I fell in love with it. I mean, I knew about ASL (which SL player doesn't) but I feel intimidated by it, as GI intimidated me on the days of SL, but this (SK) was different. It is not only the short to the point rules, it is also that I like the new look of the SK boards (even if they aren't mounted) and counters, I mean, they are new compared to my faded boards and counters, and the color rules are beautiful. Anyway, I have already about seven SK games reported here in WARS and I'm replaying S2 with my ASL tutor (Hi José) but I want more. I'm in the process of installing VASL in my PC as I plan to play online. I only have a slow phone connection so I cannot stay online for long time, but if there is a way to play via email or something similar I'd love to give it a try. I own ASLSK1, and I have ordered SK2. Once SK3 is out I may jump into full ASL (I already have the old version of the rulebook and BV donated by José who is buying the newer sets himself). If there is here a kind (and patient) soul willing to play SK scenarios using VASL via email, please send me a note as I'm not often in the forums. My email is cggranda at yahoo.com. I guess that's all. Happy gaming, CGG

Hi, Carlos. It is great to have you on board. Do you know that the Spanish wargaming magazine Alea often contains ASL scenarios?

Hi Mark. I do not know any Spanish wargaming magazines. In fact the only magazine I really knew was the defunct AH's General which I used to buy occasionally as most of my wargames are AH's. I'm only aware now of the ASL Journal, a French ASL magazine whose name I do not recall, and maybe a couple more US' ASL magazines. All of these are too "deep" for me. I get to borrow them from a friend but I only read the historical articles. Most, if not all, the ASL articles seem to require a level of ASL knowledge I do not posses. About an Spanish ASL magazine, I don't know. ASL is an English game, it would seem strange to read about it in Spanish. What do they do? Do they translate every term into Spanish? Do they keep the English game terms within the Spanish text?. In both cases it would look odd to me. CGG

ASL in Spanish doesn't seem more strange than ASL in French - cf. Tactiques, Vae Victis magazines and Franc Tireur.
The ASL community is international, now, you know.

Carlos, your English is far better than mine, so is your German and your French. Don't tell me you have any problems with the non English mags.

In fact the only problem I have with those mags are the articles written in English by non-native English speakers(*). As Robin says, ASL is an international game nowadays, with English as its main (but not exclusive) working language.

José

(*) This is NOT a complain, I rather read an article in not-perfect English than in Français or Deutsch, and I do appreciate the effort of those who make the extra effort to reach a larger audience.

Carlos, did you install VASL? The files I sent you are and old version (v4.something). I think you would be better off doing a clean install of the newest version (v5.1) if you want to play someone in the Net. V4 and V5 do not seem to be compatible for what I've read.

Call me or check the VASL threads if you run into trouble, the VASL "helpdesk" around here is far better than any other I've ever seen, ...and it is free. Amazing.

Gents.

Alea is a wargame magazine published in Spanish and includes a wargame with unmounted counters. The rules have been translated into English and you can download them from their web page.

Issue #29 include some new rules that allow you to play Spanish Civil War using the official modules (CH's Guerra Civil is unnecessary), and a new scenario based in the battle for Belchite.

Issue #30 include new unmounted counters for Nationalist and Republican OBs and "Operation Moscow", a scenario based in Fuentes de Ebro offensive, where Republican soldiers rode on BT-5 into battle beeing massacred.

The rules and the new scenarios have been developed by this modest ASL player :whist: , with no help (I mean no proofreaders, no playtesters) because of the lack of free time that all Spanish players suffer nowadays  . A friend of mine, Kevin Seime, has translated the rules and scenarios #1 and 2 into English.

I hope that Alea #31 will include scenario #3 "Cota 666", based in the Nationalist counterattack in the Ebro, where American and Canadian volunteers fought against Spanish Foreign Legion 18th Bandera, succeeding in stopping the legionaries and singing The Star-Spangled Banner when those run down the hill.

I would like that Alea publish some new scenarios based on Division Azul and Spanish republican soldiers participation in IIWW, so I am working in this project even though the historical research is not an easy task.

Fernando.-

An ASL Werewolf

Hello Everybody

I’ve playing Wargames from many years ago, I was more focused in computer games, but one month ago I bought ASL and something strange happened to me. Now I found myself loving stacks, reading rules all the time (and loving it!) and buying expensive modules. I feel like a kind of Werewolf :alien: and I just played 5 scenarios!

I write from Barcelona few miles from where Alea is Printed. Thank you Pitman for let me know this magazine exist, I will take a look.

Fernando: If you need help I offer my Conscript services expecting future Battle Hardening.

Welcome, ronin23!

Admitting you're addicted is the first step to. . . more modules and better rules knowledge!

Not new in this forum, but I have spent so much time far away that I feel I must reintroduce myself.

I have been away for I have moved to a different place. Even now I still don't have a good Internet connection so I am just having a look while at work.

I hope that soon I will participe more often here. It's good to be back!

Another Spaniard. Wonderful. We are becoming a sizeable minority of ASL players. Welcome back Alvar Fañez de Minaya.

Hi everyone,

Im a very new player having had ASLSK1 for less than a week. I still remember always seeing ASL modules in hobby stores in my youth (and heres wishing I had picked up that brand new copy of Up Front when I had it in my hands all those years ago). None of my peers were into anything as hardcore as ASL, and the game definitely had a reputation as being a very serious game with a learning curve from here to Chicago. I still love the look of those old modules... great art, the right name, even the font seems dead on. I guess it helps when you have a full time art department that has the luxury to work on that stuff irrespective of all the other production pressures.

In high school I got into wargaming with miniatures (GW's Epic Space Marine system, and then once they managed to ruin that system I moved on to 40k and the much more satisfying "naval" sim Battlefleet Gothic), and also into playing the simpler computer sims like Panzer General and Steel Panthers. This was when I really started to embrace ww2 history, and spent far too much of my youth reading musty old books no one else cared about. So maybe ive found a new hobby.

I live a bit south of Detroit, and work downtown during the week.

Hello everyone. I'm another of the old squad leader guys (started in 1977), progressed to ASL when I was in the army after my good buddy Specialist Wilson cut me a deal, if I bought the rules he would tackle them. Well he did, and pretty soon he had me up to speed on the "new game".

I played pretty solidly throughout the 90's but work and life got in the way and ASL went onto the back burner (the far back burner). I've recently moved back to my old stompin grounds Sacramento where a few of my old ASL playing buddies can still be found. So last month a couple of us broke out J105 Police Action (which I lost in a 5 turn drubbing) and I hope to make a regular monthly game of ASL from now on.

I have literally been lurking on this forum for 6 years (although I think it's changed sites a couple of times since I first found it. I even had a question on tanks in wheatfields and the hinderance for same answered by Perry back in 1999 - BTW I believe he stated that a wreck in a grain hex caused a +2 hinderance IIRC.

This is a great forum and a tremendous resource to ASL players. The greatest thing I've noticed since coming back is that there are now NEW players here because of the Starter Kits, I just think that is tremendous.

Kevin
