My grandfather was a highly decorated WWII vet, which is from where I got my interest in WWII. He never really talked about the war.

I started to get into it at the end of high school/start of university. I played MTG during university and as I wound down, slowly began to pick up the ASL modules.

I picked up the last of everything in a frenzy when it was announced AH was closing down. Never played a game until I accidentally met someone in a downtown gym in Toronto wearing an ASL shirt. Got his info and we started playing. He was a great teacher and is one of the best players in Toronto.

He had some real life issues crop up and he dropped off the FTF scene (I went to WO with him). Met another player who was really great and we played FTF until real life got him too. In the interim I picked up almost everything I could. Stopped collecting/playing in 2003/2004 and moved over to Combat Mission in the interim to get my tactical WWII fix(ASL without dice :) ).

Played COH which is great, (but not the same as ASL) last year. Slowly getting the hankering back to get into some ASL, so here I am. Have a one year old (tomorrow) but wife is really good at allowing me to get my game on so I hope to be able to play FTF at least once a month.

Forums are awesome and you guys are great and very helpful. Always found the ASL hobby to be very friendly to noobs, but the barrier is definitely product availablility (and consistency thereof).

Looking forward to meeting the rest of the local Toronto ASL scene and getting some games in.
:D
Do not be shy about visiting Cleveland in October. Just hop a ferry across Lake Erie for some very GREAT ASL playing.

Greetings All,

I've been mostly lurking for a couple of months. About time I made a proper introduction. Like many, I played SL as a teen and then life got in the way for many years. Got back into historical miniatures about 10 years ago and then reintroduced myself to ASL about 2 years ago.

I live just outside of Atlanta, GA but will be transferring to Morocco later this summer. Not expecting to find any other players there (although would be happy to be surprised) so I'm hoping to make it to a few of the European tourneys over the next few years.

Married with 4 children, 3 daughters (22, 19, 13) and one son (16) who gratefully provides some in-home ftf games!

Cheers,
Joseph
Joseph,

The computer program "Virtual Advanced Squad Leader (VASL for short)" will help you get into the game while in Morocco. There are many European players that use VASL as well.

Yep that's true............

Now we can read it is anyway LOL.

VASL is a great way to play, better if you have Skype as it is very close to the FTF but without the bad breath or counter clearing at the end.

UK cons are really cool and friendly as we have started to let even upstart euro types play inside the cons now.

Have fun with your game

Hello there

I think it's time I introduce myself here. My name is Óli. I'm from Iceland and I'm currently doing a BA in history at the university of Iceland. I'm married, and I have 3 kids.

I've had ASL system for some 16 years but never really got into playing for various reasons. This january I started again and managed to double my played scens during that last month. I'm hoping that this time I will make it stick. :)

Cheers

Hi Óli,

Great to hear from an Icelandic player. Are there many of you toiling away at ASL in the dark months of winter?

Good luck with your studies (my BA is in history;).

I used to know of three other players here, but I unfortunetly I've lost contact with them all. I am working on getting some of my current friends into the game.

Otherwise VASL has been my saviour. My opponents are all very patient and willing to explain and correct me when I'm getting things wrong(Which happens alot) :)

By the way here in the capital closest to the north pole we've almost had a whole January with out frost. Even while europe was freezing to a hald we here had on average +5°C

Like I needed to hear that. It's -8C here (low tonight of -18C) and it is actually warmer than January!

If you are interested in a couple of basic articles on infantry movement, drop me a line at battleschool@rogers.com and I will forward a couple of drafts to you. Even some veteran players have found them useful.

Cheers,

you picked the right place to drop in at. I'm new around here and everyone has been nothing but kind and supportive as I get back into the game after a long time away from it. If you haven't checked out VASL.. you should.. lots of people you can play and you can work around everyone's busy real life schedules.

I know about VASL, but in real life I have little time to internet or computer, I prefer one afternoon with ftf, my wife is ok with that, she doesn't want me in front of computer for hours. I supose a lot of people has the same problem, maybe in the future I can put more time, but at moment not.
I have returned to the game too, played many years ago but in the middle I got married, the kids and so, then a divorce, and now a new relation...... so many things and no time and no one to play..... Now I am in a new town and yes, I have players and friends and time to play, so I am happy.

You are then indeed a very lucky man, just remember to treat the partner every now and again LOL

Hope you kept your ASL candy from before. Spain seems to have a fairly active bunch

ENJOY

I can relate... I got out of the game in very similar circumstance. I remarried last year to an 'angel' who has supported me completely to indulge myself in my hobbies. We are both computer jockies, so we both share the table with our respective hobbies. Me ASL and her with reviewing albums for several internet sites. The computer (VASL) has been invaluable to me as I 'relearn' the rules and build up enough confidence in my knowledge to step out in the world of real FtF playing. Being a very shy person in real life, compounded by a destroyed self-image due to my previous marriage that my wife struggles mightily to help repair *a heart emoticon for her* compounds my insecurities about rules knowledge so I do all of my playing for now on VASL. I can't wait to really take advantage of an active FtF scene here in the DC area though. That will just take time for me and just take baby steps back into the game.

You should just go for it. I am meeting all sorts of guys all over the UK through ASL and I have yet to meet up with anyone who is not exactly what you want in a friend and opponent. My stays away have been enriched by fellow players

Greetings all,

I'm a long-time ASLer returning to the fold after an extended (15+ years) time away and in need of rebuilding my ASL collection from scratch.

I've got two questions:

First, what's the current status of the core modules? Reading here, at desperationmorale, and at the MMP site, I've gleaned that the core rules & BV are in print, DB is being released as we speak, and FKaC is gearing up to go. Is Yanks available/in print? What's the word on the Japanese? The French? The Italians? AoO? Desert/jungle/amphibious rues? Any hopes of Red Barricades reappearing?

Second, I'm living in Korea, a bit outside Seoul. Are there any ASL players on this board living in the RoK?

Thanks in advance.

Hello there.

Coming in from the Cold is both an expensive and, at times frustrating, proposition if you need to rebuild your ASL collection from scratch. I began my journey back about four years ago. So I understand some of the difficulties. Although I must admit that it was easier to do in Canada than in New Zealand. Being in Korea complicates matters slightly due to shipping costs. All the best with your journey.

Yanks can still be had from some retailers (not MMP), but a new edition is supposed to be in the works. No details on release date at this point though. Italian/desert reprint will be some time coming. Japanese, this year if we are lucky. French still available from MMP and other retailers. Don't expect Red Barricades will be reprinted for some time. The Valor of the Guards HASL will help if you have an itch for Stalingrad fighting. Budapest HASL is on its way. Plus a lot more. Good time to get back into ASL, as it is an exciting time with so many new releases and others on the horizon.

If you cannot find something elsewhere for a reasonable price (try Alex Key hobbies747@gmail.com or Scott Blanton www.gamersarmory.com/ for starters ), we may be able to help: battleschool@rogers.com

Thanks for the info. The Budapest HASL sounds particularly intriguing, though I suspect I'll need to track down a copy of AoO before hand.

Current plans are to purchase the core rules, BV, VotG, and - finances permitting - preorder FKaC. That'll keep me busy for a while.

I've been sporadically keeping track of ASL developments over the past couple of years, and it's good to see that things seem to be heating up again - it seemed like everything was OOP for quite some time. I'm glad to hear that the Japanese are in the offing (CBI has always been a favorite). A reprint of RB would be nice, though, both to accompany VotG and for old times sake. Here's hoping.

Hi and welcome back.
I would also grad Yanks whilst it is still out there someplaces. Once it becomes difficult to buy the E-Bay price will soar. Whilst it is in development it needs a total rebuild which takes time. Also the boards are in the process of being replaced with card ones but I would still go for it if it looks like you will play ouy of scenario's. I recomend getting Pegasus Bridge as well, it's so cheap it's a must. Rather than pre-order fKaC I would see if I can find it out there as well and if not pre-order it later when you know you can't get it. CoB and GH are being joined in a monster mod that we hope will see light this year but no one knows if that will happen. Meantime copies of both go for some seriously funny money.

Good luck with the search
