Hi, I'm Matt.

I just started playing ASLSK about 4 months ago. I'm a Linux Admin. living in NYC, and a friend of mine (also in the computer field) and I were looking for pastime that did not involve looking at a computer screen. I do that enough all day long, and I found myself getting less and less attracted to computer games.

Right now I'm in the middle of learning the Gun rules, which doesn't seem so bad. I'm really enjoying the hobby and I found myself in the game shop near my office buying BV and a copy of the BIG rulebook. (I clearly have a long way to go.)

The thing that I'm finding really engaging about the game is the historical information, and detail. I love the little "aftermath" blurbs on the scenarios. My Grandfather was part of the landing on Omaha Beach, and playing the game is re-kindling my interest in learning more about that part of family history.

Anyway, Glad to meet everyone. I'm loving the hobby so far. Finding out about VASL has put me back in front of the computer screen just because I'm enjoying playing so much. (I currently only have 1 opponent, the friend I'm learning the game with.) Its probably about time to look for a couple more.

Welcome to our little slice of obsession, Matt. Here you'll find a lot of expertise on the hobby. Feel free to ask any questions you have. We're a semi-disfunctional family, though, and have squabbles just like any family does. DON'T be put off by them. At the end of the day, we all sit down to roll dice together and complain about the same bad luck. Look in the Opponents Wanted subforum and post there. As I recall, there's quite a few players in NY. Enjoy your stay. Roll low.

Hi Matt and welcome. Same as my friend the Count said, also it' a great place to ask questions as someone will have the answer and don't worry about the question beeing too silly as most of us will have stumbled on it before or something else for sure.

You are at the start of a great adventure, enjoy

I'll add my welcome here too.

Never refrain from asking any question if you think it too simple, we've all got things badly wrong in our time.
When you feel like it try joining one of the tournaments too. Different opponents will teach you iffy rent ways of playing. Mind you, given you spend time in front of a screen at work maybe it will not be for you.

Hi, I am slowly returning to ASL, as my kids (and the kids of my old opponents in some cases..) are now old enough to allow the dad some ASL time occasionally. I played heavily in late 80's an early 90's. Nothing between 1997 an 2010, though.

Hi all, I've played SL some and really wanted to play online, but apparently no one does anymore, so I guess I'll have to turn to this.... Is there anyone who can help me get on my feet? I've been able to get the rules to the starter kits but haven't has a chance to read them yet (though I will soon).

So if you want to volunteer to help me out pls either pm me or give me your email and we can talk... thank in advance!!! :D

Hi there annd welcome.

If you have not yet found it, we have a opponents welcome section just off the main page, you will find some one there, also we have a great guy who specialises in teaching new players, look out for Pat Ireland his name on Gamesquad is

Ireland94 and you can look him up by going to community tab on the title bar and click on I you should find him quick. PM him and he will either play direct or try to hook you up.

Good Luck, it's not easy to change from SL but SK really helps and makes it a lot better

Have to second the Patrick Ireland (Ireland94) comment. One of the true greats of the ASL community. Meet him ASAP, you'll be glad you did. He has done more for people just getting into the hobby recently than anyone else I can think of. VASL on VASSAL is an excellent resource if you don't have any face to face (F2F) players. You can play live ASL with Skype (or other communications software) or play by e-mail - your choice. We have a sub-forum for that too should you have any questions. It is powered by Java so it pretty much runs on everything... Welcome to our obsession. We can get a little crazy, but a better bunch of geeks, I daresay you'll never meet.

New guy in A2, MI. I've had the rules for a couple years. Played a few scenarios of SL back in the 80's.

I've read the rules at least 3 times all in. I've one through the boot camp chapter a couple times with VASL. I've listened to the 2 half squads (maybe 30 podcasts). I am about ready to try and walk through a scenario on VASL just on my own. I've ordered King and Country this week for the Brit supplement rules before having the rules copied and bound at FE/Kinky's. (protection for the originals).

Maybe here in the next month I'll try a VASL game as a newbie.

I really need to recast some of the rules into a little more consistent resource before I get serious - like getting all the references for SMOKE and smoke on one playing aid cheat. Getting ALL my INF movement type options on one page with the cautions (wire rules and expending all my MF for example when getting "under").

It look like a great system to enjoy.

Personal - not over 50 but getting close. No Lab and Suburban but beagles and a jeep.

Good to see you here. Once you start with a real opponent then your rules understanding will really rise. I would look into opponents wanted section and advertise as a new guy, you will pick uo help but give detail of your location and you may find a face to face oppo as well.

Good luck

Go for it.

If your experience is anything like mine was, you'll spend the first 10-20 games being soundly beaten but learning a lot through your own mistakes and watching better players play well.

Then your first victory against a more experienced opponent will come, which is qute a rush.

Good luck, and enjoy!

Hello ASL community. I have been playing ASL since its inception and SL-GI before that, albeit rather badly. Only been to one tournamet, 95 Avaloncon. I like to play for the pure enjoyment of the game. Only really have one ftf opponent, my younger brother, who usually finds a way to roll snakeyes at every critical spot. Last scenario we played the same squad in the same melee created 8-0 and 8-1 leaders, then battle hardened and created a hero!! Not on here to whine :( We had taken about 4 yrs off so we're really just beginning to get back into it full force. Look forward to chatting with other ASLers around the globe. Roll low and God Bless. mwr

Welcome Horseshoe, plenty of chat goes on here so you won't be dissapointed.
There may be other ASL players in your area, post on the opponents wanted thread.
Sounds like your brother is indeed a lucky man.

Welcome to Gamesquad, it's a good place to chew the ASL fat, but you need the 2nd Edition attitude to understand this place. It's the perfect place to whine!

Enjoy and as Gavin said, it may well be that a guy lives one block away from you who plays. It's great to play others as it improves your play.

Played a few times before but have gotten back into it only lately. Played some ATS but moved on and it seems to me ASL is the best thing out there in wargaming.
