Welcome here, Cpt Uhl!
See just how much you are welcome here, Uhl? Only here for less than half a day, and already you've been promoted to officer! ;) :clown:

Hope you enjoy the forum as much as you enjoy the rest of the community!

This is a test...

This is a test of something flaky in the forum interface. This is only a test of something flaky in the forum interface. Had this been an actual emergency, you would have heard people screaming by now...

(As I type this, the last message of the topic is my #560, which is at the end of page 28... but the page count thingie says there are 29 pages. Clicking on "29", or on the ">", brings page 28 up again. Furthermore, while the last message in the topic is #560, the main screen says there have been 561 replies, which should make for message #562.)

John

Edit: Now that I've posted this as #561, the page count is correct at 29 pages, but there are a couple places where the interface still thinks there are 563 messages here. Probably some corruption in a database, which hopefully will not affect the forum in any other way.

Newbie Ah! I introed..2posts so far. Guess? Not doing so good...but crawling!
Heap! In a foxhole. Learning all the time. Making Enemies. Making mistakes! From what little I can afford too spend listenning/reading I wil always be...learning this game I Love!! Some Day, you might be looking across from me. In A Foxhole Gunning For YOU! Always! Thanks ASL Dudes! Long Live ASL!!!!!!!!!!!!
Scanning the members list, I saw that many new ASL players that recently joined the forum haven't written a single post.
Now, that is their full freedom, but I am asking myself if some of them hesitated to enter some of the "grognards' debates" or if they were somehow shy to write their first post here.
So it gave me the idea that newcomers could post here a hello and introduce themselves, and see how we greet them in return.

This is the place to ask all the questions about the game, whether you think they could seem basic or even "dumb".
It is also the place to meet gaming opponents, exchanges experiences and find some ASL stuff (note : no copyright law infringement allowed here).
Don't hesitate entering the debates : everybody can contribute, and "new blood" can even help !
If you fall upon a flamewar :horse: , take note that most of the time the heat of the debate and even the quarrels between some of the most vocal among us don't slip towards personal feuds - when time has come to play, and to real life encounters, things get civilized :halo:.
So make fun of it :hurray: : we are in the futile world of a wargame that tries to give a pleasing approximation of WW2 tactical conflict.:smoke:
So, WELCOME to all those who are joining this forum ! :)

Hi everyone. I'm fairly new to ASL. I've owned the 1st ed rulebook and BV for more than 10 years, but only recently sat down and took the time to learn the game. It was tough at first since I had no one to teach me. I tried playing Fighting Withdrawal with my dad. It took us eight hours just to understand the rules enough to play through the MPh of the first turn...No matter how painful that first experience was, I was immediately hooked and have been thinking about ASL constantly since then. I guess I'm just another in a long line of people bit by the ASL bug.
I've played a few ftf games and am in the middle of my first game over VASL.
I just received in the mail today (early xmas for me) Yanks, Hollow Legions, Croix de Guerre, Pegasus Bridge, Partisans, and a few annuals and scenario packs. I've already resigned myself to the fact this is going to be an expensive hobby.
I'm looking forward to meeting some of the other ASL players in the northeast.
Thanks all. I've enjoyed being a spectator of the forum so far. But hopefully this won't be my last post.
Whit

Hi Whit,
Welcome here.
All ASL players are still learning (nobody is a perfect master of the rules), so welcome to the club.
I see you took the stiff way to learn the game: congratulations!
Don't hesitate to ask questions in the rules and errata subforum (first do make a search of that subforum, as many topics already have been adressed).
Don't get p*ssed off by some forum members behavior: they don't represent the majority (and there is a "report post" button if they cross the line, so we moderators can sanction them if needed).
All in all, feel at home here.:smoke:

Welcome to the club.

BTW, I recommend going to:

www.advancedsquadleader.com

and preorder the Valor of the Guards, Doomed Battalions and the Journal 2 reprint. You will not be sorry with this investment.

yep. preordered VotG and DB...not J2 though because I've already spent so much money on ASL in such a short time I couldn't convince myself it was necessary. Would I like to? Yes.

Hello all.

I'm new to the game after a brief stint in SL in my past. In an attempt to recapture my youth, I went ebaying to replace my Avalon Hill collection that was thrown away by my evil stepmother when I went away to college. This led to my curiosity of ASL. I started collecting the modules out of the love of thousands of cardboard counters. I'm about 3/4 of the way to a complete core set and a few extras. This leads me to a few silly questions that I'd like to pose.

1) What are the tetrahedron counters. I was checking counter storage ideas and found this listed in a Plano 3701 setup. I do not have the Pacific theatre modules(saw them listed in the Gung Ho armory pages) and so I may not have them. If you have a picture or description that would be great.

2) Counter clipping, what are your thoughts. I don't want to start a bar fight over this, just the advantages and disadvantages.

3) Do you have any personal tools or tricks that have come in handy over the years-in play or storage, ie. I read one person who uses a 20 sided die to track MP if interupted by fire resolution.

Any wisdom or advice would be appreciated. If anyone lives in the Atlanta area and would like to teach a grateful new player, I would love to learn the game with real people. If nothing else, I will provide target practice for a while. Thanks for any input.

Welcome, Chip!

I'd highly recommend a search of the General ASL forum for tips on storage if you haven't already.

As for counter clipping, many think it helps with stacking. Some think it extends counter life, too. I've never seen the point. If you have time and want to, go for it.

Feel free to start threads on any topics/questions you have in the general area, too.

Hello all.
Hey, Chip. Welcome, welcome. Glad to have you aboard.

Aww, poor Chiperella. :upset: Seriously, that's a hanging offense in some parts.

This led to my curiosity of ASL. I started collecting the modules out of the love of thousands of cardboard counters. I'm about 3/4 of the way to a complete core set and a few extras. This leads me to a few silly questions that I'd like to pose.

Yes, these are found in GH, along with all the other rules, overlays, etc. to do Seaborne Assaults. I haven't used mine yet, though I sincerely hope to do so someday. Don't have a pic though; sorry.

2) Counter clipping, what are your thoughts. I don't want to start a bar fight over this, just the advantages and disadvantages.
I know I'm a bit more OCD than most around here (and that's saying something) but I take quite a bit of time on my counters. I cut them out of the sprues with an Exacto knife, cut them apart with the knife, and then carefully trim each counter along all 4 sides with the knife until they are perfectly square and smooth. I then (and this is heresy in some quarters) clip two opposite corners of my Gun and Vehicle counters with nail clippers, the upper right and lower left corners, maybe about 1/8" or a bit less. This was a hint given in the original SL rulebook and allows them to fit in the standard-size hexes better; it also makes the facing of the counter a bit easier to see.

If you truly love your counters, you will give them the best. A bit time-consuming, though, I'll admit.

I'm sure others will chime in with other tricks of the trade.

Hello All. I'm a new ASL recruit although I used to play SL, Tobruk, and Russian Campaign back in the late 70s when I was too young to know many rules. My older brother would always "interpret" the rules somehow so that my shots would miss and my men would break.

I have the rulebook and Beyond Valor so far and it is a bit daunting. My brother is now helping me learn the rules by playing on VASL and I don't think he's cheating this time. Anway, I am most interested in the Eastern Front so I'm thinking about adding VoTG. I'm too much of a novice to go to WO, although I live only about 45 minutes away. Time to get back to that rulebook.
