Duplicate post from external new members thread.

Saying hello here as this is considered polite I suspect.

Not new, at all. Not new to Squad Leader, nor ASL. Not new to wargaming as a whole. Not even new to this forum. Was active when the Armchair General site was still alive. Was active on just about all the wargame forums when they were big back in 2005. But the past is dead, and sadly, I keep seeing names I knew have also died. Devs, and just ordinary blokes. Guys I liked and guys I hated. Jeeze I feel old saying all that.

I'm still pushing cardboard around. Haven't really gotten to prefer digital over cardboard.
I'd like to say I'm famous, but, well, life happens. And I suspect a lot of you won't even remember 2000-2005 much.
And I don't recall it much either.

Why did I come here? Good question. I guess because I still play Squad Leader. And this is the only place on the internet to discuss Squad Leader. And yes, I've looked. This is it. Stupid Groups on Facebook don't cut it. And I don't like Consim.

What do I expect to get out of membership? Hmm what's even available I don't already have?
Been a while since I got anything from MMP. But when I went to Retro Squad Leader, a lot of the new stuff just didn't matter as much. After 50 boards, how many can I need? 75% of the vehicles are just to use up RAACOs.
I'd buy it all again if I won the lottery I suppose :)

Hi all, another brand new ASL player here. I've been into tabletop games of all varieties over the years, always been aware of ASL but shied away due to the startup cost and arcane nature. Had another look recently and found out about the Starter Kits, night the first one and really enjoyed how the sateen worked! Now have the first 3 and working my way through solo learning rules.

Always looking for people to play on VASL (or face to face if in the UK near the New Forest), and killing to move onto full ASL at some point

Hi! New ASL player here, spent few months learning through tutorial and videos, I think I got enough to start playing (I THINK lol). I'm in Italy and can play live VASL, so if anyone is interested PM me!
Simon
Welcome here Simon.
There is a dynamic Italian ASL community: did you contact them?
VASL also allows to play opponents if you don't find any near your place.

The ASL Players Map shows a player in Southampton.
For every player on the map there are another 4 or 5 not on the map.

Hi, a veteran solo miniatures wargamer here. I got into ASL Starter Kit recently and love it , I am lucky enough to own all four SK boxes and have been playing every SK scenario back to back in the last few weeks( I'm up to S70).

I have begun to add in some extra rules like snipers and bypass to add to the fun. I haven't got the full rules yet, I just gleaned these from internet tutorials. I also bought myself a map with walls and hedges 'cos I like making up my own scenarios.

Happy days,
Paul.

If you pick up the eRulebook here Wargame Vault - The largest wargame download store ) you get free updates forever. It includes DYO rules if you like that sort of thing.
Thanks for the link johnl.

I am seriously considering moving up to full ASL. That's why I'm adding bits to SK, a second hand copy of SK Expansion #2 is already wrapped up for Xmas which will add some more interesting rules for me to learn.

Next year I might take the plunge, it is a big outlay though and I'm not sure if I want to get stuck on the East Front with Beyond Valor. I like dotting about the different theatres in ASLSK.

Thanks again.

If you are happy to play on vasl and use the electronic rules, you can play full games without having to acquire all the modulesl
I think Peter Catchpole is around your heck of the woods.

The electronic rules and vasl is a good call, I watched a video review of the erules the other day. I never really considered vasl as being an old fashioned gadgy I kinda like the board and counters.

It is a very good idea though, I'll definitely look into vasl.

As for my miniatures wargames, I still play them but in the last few years I have built up a collection of board wargames and really enjoy them, no painting required either!. I got hold of a second hand sheet of Russian MMC today and have spent a nice afternoon clipping and sorting them. A lot easier than painting.

Hi Everybody.

Coming back to ASL after 30 years.
Thanks to VASL because there is no way for me to find a game partner in my country, Algeria.
I returned to the rules study and i'm ready to play any chapter except the PTA at the moment.
I still have no idea about the Pbem process and I hope someone in the place will guide me.

English is not my first language so excuse me in advance for any disturbance about that point.

Cheers

There is an "Opponents Wanted" topic that you could use to find someone to help you get started. Although there is a thriving PBEM community, I believe the majority of people play live on Virtual ASL.

Hi Khaled,

If you are more comfortable in French, there is also an active French-speaking community (also active on VASL) here.

Hello, everybody!

I am not exactly new here, but it has been a while. This seemed like as good a spot as any to say hello and to get reacquainted.

I have lurked only briefly in the last couple of days. I recognize a lot of names, and I have read a few threads. Some fascinating topics, and some that seem like they were topics 30 years ago (that is not meant to be dismissive).

There was a time when ASL was a lifestyle game for me, even when - perhaps - my time would have been more profitably spent in other endeavors. No relationships were ruined thereby, but...

I went cold turkey on ASL a few years ago but kept everything and kept buying. I have everything produced by AH and MMP, some in duplicate. Ah, but I have not played in some time.

Now I have far too many interests to make a "lifestyle" anything. But ASL was my first love, and I am clearing a large space in my life for it again. My first cold plunge (if you will pardon the expression for those encased in the North American deep freeze...) back into ASL will be this weekend at the MuseumFest. Such is the current plan.

I think that I should do all right, if I keep it to Chapters A thru D. I have found that much is still entrapped in my neural network. For better or worse.

I can't say that I would have much to contribute to the forums, I have been out of touch too long. But one never knows.

Regards,
