This morning, Oracle (guardians of JAVA) send me an email that the new JAVA 7 was available.

Being a software developer, I download the latest.

So when I tried to load a VASL game - NO MAP came up.

Scratching my head, the light bulb goes off, of course I loaded a new JAVA today.

I deinstalled JAVA 7, rebooted my machine, VASL was happy again.

My configuration is

Windows 7/64
VASL 5.9.2
VASSAL 3.1.15

Is the problem only with Windows 7/64 and JAVA 7? I do not know that answer.

Java 7 (32-bit) seems to work OK for:

WinXP-SP3 (32-bit)
VASSAL 3.1.15
VASL 5.9.2

Were you using the 32- or 64-bit Java?

As a software developer in the 64bit arena, that option is not available to me. Even dual booting is not an option.

Try a virtual machine (VirtualBox is free) or, as a Java developer, maybe you could help fix VASL/VASSAL so it is compatible.

I gave is some thought but decided instead to return to one of my first pleasures. I mentor/tutor new players using VASL and the Starter Kits. I get them ready to swim in the deep end of the pool with you sharks. With VASL I am able to work with players around the world.

Two questions :
- Will Java 7 install itself as a usual Java update (i.e. must I refuse any coming Java updates that are offered?)
- How the Java 7 incompatibility issue will be solved?

Doesn't look that way... for now.

The VASL/VASSAL coders will need to look at fixing, or someone will come up with a workaround, or people need to stick with Java 6.

I have been contacted on BGG that JAVA 7 (32 Bit) appears to work.

However, the party did not tell me whether they were running Windows 7 (32 Bit) or Windows 7 (64 Bit).

The configuration that failed is as follows:

Windows 7 (64 Bit)
JAVA 9 (64 Bit)
VASSAL 3.1.15
VASL 5.9.2

Note that it is BOTH Windows 7 (64 Bit) and JAVA 7 (64 Bit).

Orcacle (JAVA Guardian) did not load JAVA 7 automatically on my machine.

They emailed me that is was available, then I went and tried to download JAVA 7 (64 Bit).

At that point VASL failed.

I rolled back the JAVA 7 by removing the install via the "Control Panel->Uninstall a program"

I still had JAVA 6 installed.

You may, I repeat may, be able to install JAVA 7 (32 Bit) with Windows 7 (64 Bit) and have VASSAL/VASL work again because at that point you would be running the JAVA 32 Viutual Machine but I did not try that.

JAVA 7 (32 Bit) should be able to run with Windows 7 (64 Bit) underneath.

It would be an interest experiment, but "It looks be dangerous. You go first".

I'm sure most of the apps you are running under Win7-64 are 32-bit apps. No reason you shouldn't be able to run 32-bit Java under Win7-64. This may or may not be the issue with VASL or VASSAL. But if you don't need Java 7, I'd stick with Java 6 for now.

I'm not sure why Windows 7 (64-bit) would have a problem that Vista (64-bit) does not have. I run Java (32-bit) under Vista (64-bit) without a problem. I believe I was told over a year ago to NOT use JAVA 64-bit when running VASL.

I will say I am still running Java 6 (update 26?) on my machine.

Yes, you did but Oracle emailed me with a new release notice a couple of days ago, so I tried it - of course it failed.

What I have done is installed JAVA 7 (64 bit) on my 64 bit AMD notebook running XP Pro 64 so I can continue my JAVA 64 support with my clients.

So I just have to wait until the gnomes track down the offending issue.

So I have Windows 7 - 64 on my main machine (This one).
I run JAVA 6 - 32 bit.
And life goes on.

Mostly I was trying to warn people running Windows 7 - 64 to ignore the message from Oracle about JAVA 7 if you plan to try JAVA 7 - 64.

think I am running the same JAVA 6 on my VASL machine as you are.

Thanks for the response in any case.

Well, got a new machine with this exact configuration. I verified I'm running latest version of Java version 6 update 26. I should be go to go to proceed with installation, correct?

Now, being an "End User", I just have to figure out the arcane download instructions.....I know how to drive the car, but don't ask me how to build the Effing thing.

Ganjulama,

If you are running Windows 7 64 bit version, then only JAVA 7 32 bit version will work for you.

If you are running Windows 7 32 bit version, then only try to install JAVA 7 32 bit version. (I think if you try to install JAVA 7 64 bit on your Windows 7 32 bit that the installer will complain - but I would risk relying on the installer to catch this mistake.

If you other questions or need some walk through help just send me a pm and we will setup a date/time to Skype and walk you through the issues.

I have installed VASSAL 3.1.16.

It works fine with my Windows 7 64 bit and JAVA 6.

I have been told by one of the VASL gnomes that they do not work with any 64 bit Windows OS.

But, if you try Windows 7 64 bit + JAVA 7 64 bit + VASSAL 3.1.16 and it works let us know.

I for one think it is dangerous so you can try it first - LOL
