Prowling about the Armchair General forums these last and dark days for SZO, someone pointed out a game that caught my attention: Mount&Blade.

First of all, I'm not a regular RPG gamer, thus I'm not in the first line of fire. My C.V. only includes Morrowind (best of all :whist: ) and a bit of NWN.

Mount&Blade takes place in Calradia, a medieval realm as any other, and you can roam freely around the 3D map, travelling from a city to another trading, escorting, doing quests, seeking for enemies or whatever. A chance meeting is very likely, and it's in fact the core of the whole game (no fight, no exp points).

It features a total lack of magic (both spells and potions), enchanted items or anything involving magical performances. On the other hand, it enhances to unsuspected extremes the combat system. Do you fancy a fight on foot or riding on a horse? Do you fancy bow shooting while galloping? or brandishing a lance at full gallop against a full galloping enemy in a joust style fight? What? Yes? Then download the demo right now.

I downloaded the demo and played it for a few hours, and I was amazed for such an original work, easy concept and solid interphase.

As my English sucks, I'd rather post some links than write a mess of review.

Actually after i had played the 'demo' i thought it is closer to "Unchartered Waters" or "Pirates!"(except it is land-based) than as RPG~~~

the demo is deceptive - it truly is an RPG, but it is still a beta, so the "quests" as such, suck.

for the monet, I paid $10 for my serial number, and it works for every version they've put out :)

Yep, the game is not finished yet. However, the combat system is solid and very fun. It's an hybrid between FPS and RPG.
For instance, although having a high archery skill increases the chances to hit an enemy, you still have to aim accurately in order to hit the target. The enemy doesn't approach you straight line, but zigzaging to prevent you from hitting them.

What needs to be improved is the intercombat phases. The cities are not finnished, and there are no castles or strongholds to siege or infiltrate.

A Morrowind style in the matter of guilds and factions would enhance the "honour" and loyalty issues among the player and the factions, and their relationships. More NPCs and dialogs are needed.

Trading is very basic. There is an attempt to set up a law of supply and demand, but it's not realistic nor even random. It would be nice to buy horses and carts and set up a trading caravan, hiring mercenaries for escorting purposes.

What would you like to be in the game? Any sugestions?

heh, if you upset either of the major factions, you get a fight on your hands...

you can already do caravan missions - best way to get money too - but you do the escorting...

to be honest, I'd like a horse breeding option - I want a good steed like a Hunter, but with some of the warhorse's attributes :D

and being able to use a two handed weapon with only one hand - I can do it on a horse, why not on the ground?

The official site forum (http://forums.taleworlds.net/index.php) is very busy. There is a Suggestion Section in it. I wonder if any of the many suggestions provided by faithful players are actually being implemented. If so, and taking into account the amount of ideas involved, we can expect an amazing game for the short future.

I think there is still a lot of work to do. The fact that the game is shareware guarantees its future development, but for how long? I hope endless.

Maybe is an animation bug while on the horse. Have you tried to swing a two handed weapon and a shield at the same time on the horse? If you are not allowed, then it is an animation bug.

I had heard of this game several months ago, and promptly forgot all about it. Thanks for jogging my memory, I'll take a look this weekend.
