I'm not entirely certain what they launched the PIAT barrages at, but it seems to have been a not uncommon practice for Canadian troops in action in NWE. I would say it is something that would give, say a mixed kampfgruppe with a few gun armed halftracks and maybe 1 old Pz IV, dug into some cover with a bit of infantry, or on a reverse slope to delay the Allies, a huge bit of pause to fall under such a barrage in a "recon by fire" role of shooting at anything looking suspicious before moving closer to investigate.
