My father passed away last week. It was not sudden. He smoked 2+ packs of cigarettes a day for well over 45 years. He came home from a routine hospital visit and fell down dead less than an hour earlier. Feels oddly weird to know I will never speak with him again. -- jim
Both my folks were smokers and it certainly contributed to their passing in their 60s. Mom's sisters didn't smoke and all of them are in their late 80s to mid 90s.

I was a late addition to my family. My father passed away at 56 in 1966. My mother also passed away at 56 in 1976, when I was 19. Both were smokers, but they did not die of lung cancer. I never had a chance to know them as an adult, which changes the relationship quite a bit. Its been so long that I have almost forgotten what it is like to have a parent.

So sad. Mine were gone by the time I was 42. At least I got some time as an adult with them.

Doing the simple math and having seen a few pictures of you, I would have never guessed your age. Kudos to you.

My condolences, Jim. Lost my dad in ‘88 and my mom (at 96) a year ago. It is a strange feeling to realize that I now am in the “senior tier” of the family hierarchy.
My condolences as well.

After my grandfather passed in the early 2000s, none of my male Dalton family members older than me (my two uncles and my Dad) lived passed 65. Lost my uncle Bo in 2006 to a stroke/blood clot, my dad to early onset Alzheimer's in 2007, and my Uncle Bobby at age 65 in 2012. I was 43 and the oldest male member of the clan.

Best wishes to you. Hopefully you soar far past them.

Tobacco killed both my parents: My father in 1985 from throat cancer (2+packs a day-Camels). Mother (also 2+packs a day-Camels) quit smoking
in 1989, but the damage had been done. Lung cancer took her quickly in 2022.

Sad news indeed. What a fantastic legacy of game designs Dean has left behind. My first Dean Essig design was a CWB Antietam game in the late 80s "In Their Quiet Fields". So many years ago.
