It’s a big thing in the 1870-71 occupation and a big impetus to a lot of things that the French Army had overlooked for a long time. Basically that took up the slack where the bureaucracy failed. Frankreich always is somewhere in this cycle. They vacillate between weakness and the strongest and it will always be that way.

The meme about “la resistance” during WW2 is the fakest of all the fakeries. Basically just all of the psychopaths and lifelong criminals grifting onto the victorious side of a war, as well as total frauds who never lifted a rifle but wanted credit for doing ‘their part.’

I think there is an implicit distinction that historiographers know and use because ‘les francs tireurs’ were taken seriously and even referred to by name by the Prussian occupiers. “La resistance” is a meme that political weirdos and posers glomph onto but amongst historians basically understand it to mean a le Hon Hon cigarette addict in a Breton shirt who picked a German’s pocket while he was banging a whore upstairs.
