The Amazing Rando
Hi guys,
I've read the few articles on map design that I can find.
However, for two nights in a row, I started to design a map of finland....I've collected a lot of info, and even have a map nearly the same time period. But as I begin, I've run into problems.
First, I am not sure of the size per hex I should shoot for. I started making a 10k per hex map, as the legend of my original has that as it's smallest measurement. I began outlining it with a border or water where appropriate. Went fine, except I ran out of room with Opart limits. So I started again with Opart300. Live and learn.
I went down the western border of finland and then did the coast. Was pretty satisfied until I got to the actual area where most of the Winter War was fought, and I realized.....Oh crap. With 10k per hex, the pennisula will be too small.
I have most of the previous Winter War scenarios. None model all of the front...at least those that I can open. I am starting to think there is a good reason for this. Some of the war is so particular, it has to be modelled on a smaller scale. I'm at a loss of where to take it from here.
The battle on the pennisula is where the concentration of the armies lie, but the battles near the middle matter for supply reasons and shouldn't be left out of a major undertaking to portray this war. Problem seems to lie in the fact that other than in the south, this war had no continuous front as the Russians were confined to the roads.
If anyone has given this or something similar any thought, and might be able to provide some assistance, I'd be grateful. Finland is large and the actual site of battle is relatively small. Perhaps I could black out much of the map and include three or four main sites of battle. Don't know. Perhaps I just need to talk it out.
