Making Maps using Ordnance Survey (OS) Data

I would appreciate some help.

I have 1:50,000 OS maps for the UK and DEM data in .dxf format.

How can I convert .dxf to .dem format?

I have all of the available ATF map making guides but am none the wiser.

I thought that I had seen something along these lines at the website http://freegeographytools.com. I just looked at the site, and cannot seem to find it but it is quite late here so that may be a reason.
