If the crew abandons the vehicle and takes the 81mm mortar with them...can the halftrack then move during that phase since it has a retained inherent driver (per Note M)?

I'm thinking no...but want to make sure one way or the other.

Removed as part of normal unloading costs. I don't see why not, the crews not driving.

Per Note M the mortar can be removed (D6.631)...which in turn points to (D5.41) which indicates that the crew is technically abandoning the vehicle and therefore using all of its MFs to do so.

Since normally a vehicle is considered to expend 1/4 of its MPs per MF expended loading/unloading/(abandoning?)...this is what leads me to believe that the vehicle could then not move (despite the retained inherent driver).

Your explanation only makes sense to me if you're willing to overlook the fact that the vehicle notes specifically state that the half track has an inherent driver.

Don't get me wrong...in my particular instance which brought forth the inquiry...I would love to be able to remove the mortar and then drive away as well...still just not sure that it can be done.

Why would the note state that it has an inherent driver if it could not be driven? I say you can drive it.

The crew is abandoning the vehicle which uses all of the vehicle’s allotted MP allowance. The inherent driver can still drive it minus the mortar and crew but will have to wait until the next MPh.
I believe this is the intent of the rule.

D5.1 - All unarmed vehicles are manned only by an Inherent Driver who never leaves the vehicle and is never treated as a crew. See also, G15.11.

H.German.59 SPW 250/7 and 251/2 have an inherent driver.

H.American.MAVN M -- mortar ht have an inherent driver.

H.British.37 AVRE has an inherent driver.
Note 77 -- 2pdr Portee has an inherent driver.

These are examples of vehicles with an inherent driver. All unarmed vehicles and those with a note saying it has an inherent driver, they have one. Vehicles that lack that note don't. Take the CMG out of a SPW 250/sMG, that vehicle does not have an inherent driver.
