Just spotted this in the help me files. This setting is what needs to be looked at to get a decent default value going and I expect it fix all he long range issues.
"Degrade over range: If this option is on, the LOS will gain LOS blocking points based on the ratio of actual range to the maximum sighting range, irrespective of any terrain, illumination, or other factors. Specifically, it models things like dust, haze and other features of the atmosphere that degrade visual sighting. For example, if the Maximum sighting range were 10,000 meters, an LOS of 2500 meters would automatically gain 25 blocking points before accounting for any other conditions."
