Hi all,

I am trying to prepare some files to print labels for my counter storage, and for this I would like to use the counter pictures from VASL. The thing is, I'm not sure how to find them...

I suppose there's a reasonably easy way to get these, can someone here enlighten me?

Very easy. Unzip the VASSAL module. In the Unzip archive you will see a file folder 'images'

I use 7zip for this. cheers! [edit -- in 7zip you 'open' the archive not 'unzip' it. then you can copy the image folder to your desktop or wherever]

You will need to add the .zip extension to the module's file name.

You will need to add the .zip extension to the module's fike name.
This may be true for some other zip/unzip programs, but not with freeware 7-Zip installed. Users can right click on the vasl module itself, scroll over '7-Zip' and click on the top sub-menu selection 'open archive.'

How to manipulate images is explained in the VASSAL help file Creating Modules:

http://www.vassalengine.org/wiki/Creating_Modules#Which_image_format_is_best_for_my_maps_and_counters.2C_JPG.2C_GIF_or_PNG.3F

With the zip extension, no need to have a special program (at least on Mac).

Hmm, I see why I missed it - the vmod file is actually a .zip renamed (and the original .zip file I downloaded was just a zip file containing a single zip file renamed).

Thanks guys!

np!

per the help file:

  1. Unzip the module into an empty directory
  2. Locate the unused image file in the images folder and delete it
  3. Zip the contents back into a single module file
Some common zip archive tools are Winzip or 7Zip for Windows, and the command line zip program on Mac and Linux. To work with the tools, you may also need to change the filename to end in .zipinstead of the normal .vmod file type. Remember to rename it back afterwards.

After you unzip it, all the images are in individual (by country) folders. The Chinese, for example, are in a folder titled CH. The Russians are RU. Etc.
