Given how much fun we had at Siem Reap, discussions has already started with respects to the location of the 2018 tournament.

Before more proposals surface, and given the discussions we have had, I'd like to put this to a proper vote - to get an official indication of interest, if you will.

If we are to hold our 2018 Asia Pacific ASL Tournament in July - where do you prefer it to be?

All three are great choices.
Would love to do Siam Reap again, Tokyo I think might be better in 2019, if we can get a few Japanese
players to come over to Singapore in 2018 that would be fantastic.

Voted for Singapore cause it's a good place for a family travel, especially with two children. I missed the tournament in Siem Reap this year, so it's also a good choice for me. Tokyo is a nice place, cause I lived there for 2 years, a new place is more attractive. But I'll be very happy if I would have a chance to go there and meet many friends again. So it's really a little difficult for me to make the decision.

Anyway no matter where it will be next year, I will try to join you!
Actually, CAN'T wait to join you!!!

Singapore, just cause I never been there before and might then visit some mates in Malaysia after. That said - George's Tokyo event is around the same time (early july) so I'm hoping it doesn't clash, as I'd like to go to both :p

Shameless plug for Singapore, but happy in Siem Reap if Raphael can work his magic again. Hard to spend $25 in Cambodia!

Singapore historical sites that I know of:

Fort Siloso (on Sentosa, short cab ride)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Siloso

Kent Ridge
https://www.nparks.gov.sg/gardens-parks-and-nature/parks-and-nature-reserves/kent-ridge-park

Opium Hill

Fort Canning (Centrally located)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Canning

Kranji Cemetary
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kranji_War_Cemetery

Misc stuff:
One of the best airports in the world
Hotels are reasonably priced and there is a wide range of options/prices
Food is good (but I admit Tokyo is better) and again a wide range of options/prices
Good MRT system, but taxi's are relatively cheap

Some more information on Singapore:

[Location]
Final location still to be determined, but this is one location we are looking at. Should be able to handle 20 guys (10 games or so) fairly easily. This location is not near an MRT (train/rail) station, but is located within 10 minutes of a shopping mall and two food courts for dining options and is also 10 minutes from the river (beers, food, etc..). Taxi/Uber puts this in easy range of most hotels however.

Hours would be 8AM to 10PM.

[Air fares & Hotels, 3 month prior reservation]
No tweaking or fancy crap to make the numbers look good, just what I got out of Orbitz one day. Prices in USD. Price conscious people will certainly find better deals.

Flight Costs 3 months in Advance – 2 Way (Thurs/Sun, listed is budget/normal) All flights direct except where noted.

Sydney: $300/465
Perth: $238/386
Manila: $220/267
Taipei: $185/332
Hong Kong: $169/333
Tokyo: $340/$660 (budget includes 4hr layover)

Hotel Costs 3 months in Advance (Thurs – Sat Night) – Daily Average
Budget $56.00
5 Star $124.00
Copthorne (next to the location) $159.00

[Food]
You should be able to get by on around $10 SGD if you eat at the food courts. One is inside and air conditioned, the other outside. Other dining options are of course available. For me, I eat a salad or healthy sandwich for around $12 SGD.

[Drinking]
This is where the authorities will hit us as the tax on this is pretty high. Beers nearby are roughly $14 SGD on the river, a bit less for local beer (Tiger) or more for better stuff (Erdinger, Stella or similar).

We can mitigate this a bit with a cooler and buying in bulk. Perhaps pay as you go, just grab a beer and leave $8 (or whatever it comes to).

[Language]
English/Singlish and Chinese are spoken widely. Getting lost on the way or having trouble while off alone should not be issues.

[Misc]
A pool is right outside with chairs/tables. Not that I want to see anyone of you in their swimsuit, but perhaps a Pizza/Beer evening on Friday or Saturday to build camaraderie and hold the costs down a bit.

I'll preface this by saying I am not voting, as the odds of me attending any tournament anywhere are very, very poor at this time. (If things improve in the near future, then I'll reconsider my options.)

That said ....

To me, this seems an ass-backward way of going about this. "Let's find somewhere that people want to go, then we'll see if a tournament can be organised there."

That's incredibly silly. What you need is someone willing and able to organise a tournament in a particular location (wherever that location may be), and then advertise the appropriate details so that everyone else can determine whether they want to go there. Then you vote.

Also, as I recall, the original idea was for a floating tournament, to represent the richness and variety in the region. It's not a floating tournament if it doesn't float. I'm sure Siem Reap was lovely, I'm very sorry that I wasn't able to make it, but going back there immediately means that it's no longer an "Asia-Pacific Tournament", it's a "Cambodia" tournament. Not that a "Cambodia" tournament is inherently a bad thing, but it's a different thing to an "Asia-Pacific Tournament".

A floating tournament should not repeat a location until it has to; and if it has to, it's perhaps time to reconsider the whole concept. If I was voting, I'd vote for any location that has not yet held a tournament before I'd vote for any location that has.

Oh, and where are all the other possible locations? If there's only three places in the entire Asia-Pacific region that can host a tournament, why are we even bothering with going through the charade of a "vote"?

Bruce, before I send you ass-backwards out of another forum (in a huff, which you seem to do quite well)....

* We actually have THREE groups of organizers WILLING AND ABLE to organize tournaments in THREE different locations. *

So now we are voting.

Whatever you wanna say - please try to be constructive.

Rgds Jack

I could possibly attend Siam Reap, Diana would love to vacation there with me. Costs are, of course, a factor.

Been to Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and Xi'an; so my vote is influenced by the possiblity of a new adventure.

I'm hoping to go to ASLOK in 2018, so would not be very likely to go to the A-P event, but would vote for Singapore of the three sites mentioned.

What would be more favourable (for my situation anyway) would be Oahu (which would include Pearl Harbor and the Pacific Aviation Museum) if there is someone there to get things together.
