Advantages in combat through RMT have been in Eve for a long time, long before PLEX, and the game worked okay. Like $30 gets you pimped out about as good as any individual would want. A whole lot of players can afford that but don't bother because the normal stuff is good enough and much cheaper. Those that do pay for advantages often become targets for other players looking for a big score. (How many guys in low sec have been busted up mission running in carriers?) It's unlikely to be all that different a game in terms of combat balance whether they go through CCP or other players via PLEX.
The big, serious trouble for gameplay, is the industrial and production side. Right now players getting rich from PLEX fueled ship and module sales will have the most to lose. It's a transfer of power from the established player base to the new players. That generally means they are making the game over.
And the part they might have found makes sense to sacrifice is the economic side (in game) that they have so long boasted about. As neat as a player driven economy is, it might be less profitable overall than a whole different kind of MMO setup.
I think they're noticing that a lot of people have no interest in the amount of shear mouse clicking, work, and study are involved to do well in Eve industrial stuff. So they'll find some stuff to leave for industrialists, but remove ships and ammo from their exclusive control.
If the PTW transactions are expensive enough, they will still be able to compete with CCP.
