Hi all-
Heres an old AAR I posted a few years back on the old ASLML, this is a really fun scenario and roar shows it at 7 Brit wins to 6 German wins, so it is pretty balanced.

Lawless Ways OVHS27 Even!
Hi all-
Played an Operation Venereal action called Lawless Ways HS27, this is
a
fairly large gem with my arch-nemesis Rob “Hailmary OBA†Banozic. As I
said this is a fairly large action consisting of 11 ½ turns, half of
the
RR map which kinda felt like a desert action in some ways due to the
openess of the terrain. The Brits have some really nifty stuff here
including one 57L ATG, 76LL ATG, 14 squads of mixed quality, 100mm OBA
(normal ammo), an MMG, 5 LMGs, 4 Piats, 3 carrier A’s, 8 foxholes,
radio
and a 51mm LT MTR.
On turn 6, the Brits get two elite squads, a 9-1 and 1 LMG which all
enter
along the north edge which is the Goch-Kalkor road. The Germans get
some
really cool’s toys too 3 Panther’s, 2 PzIVJ’s, 1 Jpz IVL, 3 SPW251/1’s
and a mixed bag 20 squads as well as 80mm OBA.
Very cool scenario. I'm not sure whom it favors even though the Jerrys
won
on turn 9, two turn earlier then the actual game end of 11 1/2 turns.
My
opponent critical hit my radio man with 80mm OBA, so as the Brits, I
was
only able to get off one fire mission which did not do to much damage
to
the Germans other then breaking a few squad and immobilizing a
panther.
As for the Brit Set-up, I placed my 2nd line infantry up front to keep
the
Germans from racing forward to quickly. I should also point out, that
both
the Brits and German infantry are pretty fragile IE both have ELR 3 and
both only have a handful of elite troops, the rest being first line and
2nd line infantry
The rest of my troops went behind gg22 to gg16 hedges entrenched in
foxholes so as to gain concealment before game start., I also placed a
1st line squad with a Piat in U17. The 76LL was put in hex LL21 with
the
CA facing the road and OO23 and the 57L was placed in X23 facing the
road.
The Carriers were placed upfront in hexes z23, w22 and V16.
The placement for the 57L was not good, the Germans set-up is pretty
much
in the Brits face and without concealment, this small blocking force
becomes a road bump on the way to German victory. Lucky for me, Rob
rolled
pretty bad and was only able to break the ATG Crew after numerous MA,
MG
and infantry fire shots. Still, all I had left now in that area was two
2nd line units an 8-0 and piat to hold off those whom did not prep
fire.
Luckily, a lot of his guys around the U25 area had fired, especially
when
that ATG was reveled.
In the S20 area, the Germans fired on my other 2nd line squads, one was
in
building V18 and the other was entrenched in hex W19. BTW I should
mention
that it was also raining due to Rob rolling boxcars on the wind roll at
start. I also think that the rain helps the Germans more in this
scenario,
since my shots at him are hindered by the rain which kinda sucks.
On turn two the Germans began to advance in earnest, yet my 2nd line
guys
managed to hold up his advance with residual FP and first/ final fire
attack which broke 3 of his squads as well as ELR’ing them. My OBA
kicked
in also, but I was in a bit of a pickle, do I go with harassing fire or
a
regular OBA attack against his armor, I went for the Armor and all I
got
out of it was a few broken squads and an immobilized Panther. I think
if
the Brits get their OBA, go for harassing fire, that way you will more
then likely hit the Germans real hard since they are all in the open.
Well, I guess one fire mission aint bad, this is due to the Germans
rolling a critical hit with their 80mm OBA at my 8-0 in a foxhole, yup,
nothing like a 36-4 to make your ASL day. With the loss of the 57L and
the
Brit OBA, things were starting to look bleak for the Brits, but it aint
over till the fat lady sings, that’s what I say!
By turn 5, my whole front line is obliterated but surprisingly, my
Brits
actually held out that long, they also managed to takeout a PZIV to
boot!
Now the Germans were closing in on LL21 and OO23 with their Armor and
HT.
My 76LL opened up on one panther, rolled eyes, then Boxcars for a dud,
another great ASL moment! My infantry were also taking a beating too
from
Rob’s Germans, worse, my units in LL21 were now encircled, still, Rob
will
need to shift forces over to II12 to get the last building, so there is
still hope.
Turn 6 rolls around, and my infantry fire into a knot of Germans behind
GG20 hedges, stupid Rain are making my shots real tough to score any
decent MC’s, but at one point I do, unfortunanlty the Germans get two
hero’s and two battle hardened squads out of the deal. No joy in
mudville
today. On the bright side I did take out two Panthers, but on an
intensive
fire shot at the German JpzIV, I Melfed my 76LL. I was surrounded, my
position was about to collapse, so I had nothing to lose.
By Turn 9 its all over, My reinforcements which I used to garrison
II12,
get pounded into dog food by a PzIV and with the rest of my forces
gone,
playing on becomes a forlorn situation.
A couple of mistakes on my part, some real bad luck and some real good
luck by the Germans sealed the Brits fate in this one. I think the 57L
will need to go in OO23 or PP23, putting it up front was just dumb.
Losing
my OBA early on, really helped the Germans move forward more quickly
plus
the Rain played havoc with my rolls too.I'll say this, this module
really
reminds of the desert in many ways, the open ground, the rain is kinda
like dust and so on.
Great game and a great scenario.
