I'm just setting up a VASL scenario and have a PTO question:
Does Kunai exist in December?

i.e.:
Do I first apply G.6.1 and then B.15.6, or first B.15.6 and then G.6.1?

G.6.1 Whenever PTO Terrain (G.1) is in effect, all grain becomes kunai
B.15.6 SEASON: Grain does not exist and is treated as Open Ground outside its growing season which, if otherwise undefined, extends from June to September

Kunai is never treated like grain. It is treated like brush. Nothing in B15 applies to Kunai.

Grain becomes Kunai. I don't think that Kunai adopts the properties of Grain.

Sure.

But my question is:
If I apply B.16.1 first, there is no grain in December, and so in PTO terrain it can not be converted into kunai.
If I apply G.6.1 first, there is kunai, which is not affected by B.16.1 in December.

There is no Grain, regardless of the month, because it has been converted to Kunai by the rule PTO is in effect. The "Grain" that is on your mapboard is Kunai.

Kunai is treated as brush, which exists whatever the time in the year.
You simply use the grain depiction to define what hexes are kunai, but grain rules never kick in.

Grain *depiction* on the map board becomes Kenai. In the same way grain depiction on the map becomes plowed fields. Otherwise you could say that plowed fields can't exist by the same argument.

Thanks for the feedback.

When I select the board in VASL, then select PTO light jungle, and then select December, the kunai disappears.
This was the reason for me to ask.

If you select a board, set the month to December then set it back to June, grain goes out of season then comes back, while orchard goes out of season in December and remains out of season when you switch back to June. That is for ETO. vasl makes some attempts to follow the rules but it is up to you to make sure the code does not have any defects. Palm trees and kunai do not go out of season in PTO. On the terrain transformations dialog you have to make sure the orchards "out of season" checkbox is not checked and the grain dropdown is set "in season."

Yes as JR says above, don't expect VASL to be right rules-wise. It is up to the player to ensure VASL follows the rules, not up to VASL to ensure the player follows the rules.
