The problem was, Pound had Enigma Decrypts positively saying Tirpitz wasn't going to attack, and that she was changing base. Also, he was taking command away from the men on the spot, C-in-C Home Fleet, and the escort commander. With the escorts in place, Tirpitz would have to get past a swarm of escorts, including 2 subs and 4 cruisers. The Atlantic convoy rules specifically stated that the convoy shouldn't scatter unless the escort had been overwhelmed. While hindsight is a wonderful thing, Pound's decision was openly argued against from the moment he said it. He just didn't listen.
