Is the space in EVE cold and lifeless?

Interesting article from Kotaku about space games and the way space is almost always a "cold and lifeless" place. That's not to say there's nothing to do in EVE as there are plenty of things to do. But there doesn't seem to be any significant difference from one part of EVE space to another save who lives there.

A while back the CCP devs talked about doing away with the current system backgrounds and adding space landmarks like nebula's that change in perspective as the player jumps from system to system. But so far there have been no examples of what that might look like or whether it would actually affect gameplay in some manner.

Wouldn't it be cool if different areas of EVE space actually had distinct properties? Or perhaps stellar objects that change the local environment and necessitate unique tactics.

EVE space isn't empty, but it is fair to say it's rather generic and indistinguishable.
