Any idea what it was?
And finally:

"Below and in the following pages is the official report on the August, 2003 incident in Iraq where the side armor of an American M-1 tank was penetrated by an RPG round. Two members of the crew suffered minor injuries and no serious damage was done to the tank. The weapon used was apparently a Russian RPG warhead specially designed to penetrate composite armor. In 1988 the Soviet Union weapons organization "Bazalt" was the first in the world to develop a antitank grenade launcher round capable of penetrating composite armor, as well as screened armor and explosive reactive armor. This was done with a tandem warhead for the RPG launchers. The new warhead, the PG-7VR, has been widely used, but until the recent incident in Iraq, was not known to have actually penetrated composite armor in combat."

Looks like some kind of solid penetrater accelerated
into the M1 using the energy from the first charge
detonating against the outer skirt.

Anyone know a lot about recoiless rifles? Could it have been one with an AP round? I've not heard of them being used/found over there...

This has been discussed to death on tanknet.

RPG with HEAT warhead, probably a tandem warhead.

Nothing special to see here. The very thin holes lead to the impression that this is some super-duper new weapon with very low caliber, but this is what a HEAT penetration looks like when it barely penetrates, the hole gets very small. It's not like a solid shot which makes a full-size hole every time.

Electric Armor

Nice site, Rame. I saw something similar last week under the heading "Capacitative Armor". The descriptions are almost the same.

On the disabled M1 - I'd read about this incident last summer. According to the reports I read, the crew didn't see the weapon fire prior to the explosion. I'd speculated at the time that an insurgent had rigged a large shaped charge as an IED and simply detonated when the tank went by. The shot placement was excellent.

On further reflection, an advanced RPG warhead seems much more plausible.

Sorry, by no means did I want to say anything against your posting.

I just had a flashback to the battlefront forums who when seeing this sequence were firmly convinced the Russians gave the insurgents a railgun. I'm not kidding. Since them I'm a little short-commented on those pictures.

I would wear "curmudgeonly" as a badge. :D I don't think anyone took offense.
As far as the rail gun idea I think that tells a lot about the age group of the two forums and players. Not intended as a slam, slight, or any other such imagined offense. I just think most TacOps players are aware of what is available and what is science fiction........at least for now.

Rail guns, man portable nuclear rockets, individual armored suits those are weapons for TacOps.SP. If it wasn't for copyright:cry: the Major might even humor us/me on this one.

I remember someone trying to convince me it was a .50cal (or Greater) anti-materiel rifle :)

I think someone mentioned the Steyr IWS2000 w/ 20mm tungsten sabot :D
