last sunday 7 players fought the battle of ice sea 1917 -variant-
Jess, Rich and Martin(saddletank) were in command of the RN forces, vdT, Hipper, Otto and myself played on the german side. vdT as host was in command of the fleet, Hipper the escorts of the battlewagon, otto the escorts of the Scout forces and myself the german battlecruisers. In the first part we did some scouting to the north and west until some Rn CL showed up in west and sw later also in NW. main heading of the german forces was west. After a few salvos of the scouting forces at the RN CL the BCF was sighted in west and the battle of the BC started.
The exchange of heavy shelles resulted in the explosion of Seydlitz and sinking of Lion as well as the heavy flooding of Lützow which must be redrawn from the line but could be saved. In the meantime the RN battleline came into range so the german BC must increase the distance. The german battlewagon was able to open fire with the modern ships as baden und Bayern and the Kaisers and Koenigs as well resulting in the sinking of Resolution but also with the loss of PR Luitpolt. A torpedo attack caused a disorder of the british line and maybe also a hit on one of the ships. This was used to make it back home but just at this time Von der Tann and Moltke both got magazine hits in about 2 min and exploded. Proncess Royal was also in sinking condition at the end of this day.
The ACH settings were poor ammo off and critical handling on. We also had a number of strange problems with jumping owner of some ships as well as warnings about the connection of one player.
In general it was a interesting battle but maybe a little bit one-sided due to the used greenboys and number of brit 15in ships.

Here are the statistics of the german BC:

I had the BCF in this Battle, and was engaged with the KM BC force throughout. Our ships were more or less in the Van during most of the battle, through many changes of course. I endeavored to keep the range at above 15K if I could. I managed to knock Lutzow out of the fight. My escorting LCS was running for its life throughout the battle and may have torpedoed her. I also sank Seydlitz though I did not see her go, and don't know the circumstances. Toward the end with Lion gone, and PR out of the fight, and sinking, it got to hot for me and I opened out to about 19k. It was at this time with a remarkable bit of luck that both Moltke and VDT blew up almost simultaneously.

A very enjoyable fight.

Agreed. Apart from some connection problems that eventually forced one player to quit the game the battle was very enjoyable. I was in command of 5th Battle Squadron RN (less Queen Elizabeth which by late 1917 was fleet flagship) and had an escort of a squadron of 4 light cruisers and a weak flotilla of about 9 DDs plus a flotilla leader and HMS Champion.

This scenario begins with 5BS detached well to the NE of the main RN force and Rich (playing Beatty) elected to concentrate our forces at once. 5BS thus turned from a course of 090 to 225 and later 205 and finally 180 to get into the van of the fleet but astern of the planned deployment of the BCF.

As I was steaming south with all despatch reports of sightings of several German CLs and DDs grew more numerous until our battlecruisers sighted the German BCs headed west slap bang into the junction point of our battlecruisers and battleships. Thus they were unable to get ahead to the east of the battleline and formed up in rear of Rich's ships. By now my screening CLs had sighted and were engaging some German CLs who skulked off to the south-eastward initially but then turned to the SW.

Unfortunately 5BS while steaming as ordered to get to their deployment position were seen by one of the enemy CLs and our position was given away.

5BS was able to take up a position as planned in the van of the battle line on course 060 and then sighted the German battleships. As these were heading on about course 235 and the German BCs were also far to the SW, Rich/Beatty elected to reverse the battlefleets direction and steam on a parallel course to the enemy, heading approximately 225. This put 5BS in the rear of our fleet, a position it maintained from then on.

A general engagement now began with 5BS initially opening fire at 24,000 yds on Bayern and Baden leading the German line, engaging by pairs. However a number of other RN battleships of Rich's squadron were also engaging the head of the enemy line so fire was switched to the rear four enemy firing ship for ship. After only a few minutes the second to rear enemy was seen to disappear in a heavy cloud of smoke, HMS Warspite having fired only some five or six salvoes at this target. Warspite then switched to the 5th ship from the enemy rear.

A torpedo attack by the enemy destroyers now took place against the centre of our line though 5BS was not inconvenienced by this. One RN battleship exploded and we had lost a battlecruiser too by this point when it was reported with glee by Jess (ANav) that at first Seydlitz, then, miraculoulsy Moltke and Von der Tann had all been destroyed by explosions.

A light cruiser was also lost by each side and a number of DDs as well during the torpedo action but at this point the Germans rapidly disengaged to the SE. My CLs were ordered in pusuit to maintain contact but we called a halt to the battle at this point.

5BS took no serious hits and lost no turrets though Barham suffered at least one hit on or near the waterline and some flooding reduced her speed by 1kt. All four ships were lightly damaged when the enemy withdrew and 2 of my CLs were also a bit dented.

* * * * *

This is a very good scenario which places the two sides far apart at the start and so allows scope for some clever manouvering however there are too few RN DDs we felt on the RN side and perhaps 1 or 2 too many 15" gunned BBs although I used a historical formation (1st BS) when creating it and in fact Ramillies should be present as well, historically but is not avaailable in the ship database.

It is nice to hear of the German side complaining our ships are too powerful for a change! That rarely happens. It is more usual for the KM to come out better off in our MP games so it was quite refreshing to give the Kaiser's boys a drubbing for once!

The issue with exploding magazines is it can win or lose - or abruptly swing a battle's fortunes - in minutes. The previous week with a smaller battle cruiser action with both ACH options set in the RNs favour the German BCs lost Derfflinger but sank no less than four of their opponents - HMS Tiger to about the 2nd or 3rd salvo from Von der Tann, so it can go both ways.

We have played this scenario several times, and each time we had a different outcome and different deployments. This time, visibility rose quickly and allowed for the British superiority in range, and with the Grand Fleet being deployed most efficiently and Greenboys available, we had quite some firepower to deal with. Our BB were taking considerable damage, König lost a turret before she was even in range for example, but most of them stood up well to the British fire except Prinzregent Luitpold which went down to a magazine detonation.

It's apparent that with the poor ammunition off and so many 15" gunned ships in the battle the RN is a deadly force if it can concentrate. I noticed most of the damage done to I.SG was by 15" shells which presumably was all Repulse and Renown's work.
