Just look at last months top 10. Talk about meh.

1. L.A. Noire | Take 2 Interactive
2. Brink | Bethesda Softworks
3. Lego Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game | Disney Interactive Studios
4. Portal 2 | Electronic Arts
5. Mortal Kombat 2011 | Warner Bros. Interactive
6. Call of Duty: Black Ops | Activision Blizzard
7. Zumba Fitness: Join the Party | Majesco
8. NBA 2K11 | Take 2 Interactive
9. Just Dance 2 | Ubisoft
10. Lego Star Ware III: The Clone Wars | Lucasarts

I'm usually a big Rockstar fan, but I took a pass on LA Noire. I love their games for the open world aspect and I usually spend more time just exploring and screwing around then I do on the main story stuff. LA Noire sounds heavily scripted with few real options outside the main story. That doesn't appeal to me much.

There's still some heavy hitters coming for the second half of the year, but so far 2011 hasn't offered alot.

I think it is mainly:

a) competition from non-gaming activity, namely social networking, youtube, getting hooked on wikipedia chains for hours and other new Internet related ways to kill your free time.

b) supercasual games, including games running inside social networking sites, web-only free games, games on portable electronics devices including pads.

c) to a lesser degree the easier availability of less casual hobbies thanks to Internet resources. Photography is big now. Making and recording music using garageband and software-only synthesizers. Messing around with alternative operating systems.

d) more porn and higher bandwidth.
