I used to spend a lot of time in Moscow so I used to ask random Russians how they could tell by looking, who was American, Because they can, no matter how one might dress.

The recurring theme was how Americans hold their heads. Russians look down a lot. Americans look straight ahead.

When we went to the Lithuanian SSR in '79 my cousin told me you could tell someone was either KGB or Westerner from the shoes.

I'll buy that. Russian shoes are pretty different.
