US Turn 19:

RETURN FILE: Japanese Turn 18: Japanese make a massed attacked to retake Point Cruz which falls again, but this time has a good amount of entrenched defenders to hold the position......

US Turn 19: LAND COMBAT & ADVANCEMENT: Point Cruz (previously taken last turn by a massed Japanese attack force) is counter-attacked by all 3 Battalions of 27th Army and is nearly retaken but leaves the Japanese tanks defending the point....Battalion groups of the 35th attack the location to the south of Point Cruz, weakening the defenders but not able to retreat that position either.....Meanwhile the US flanking maneuver around the Japanese south defense perimeter is getting smaller (very quickly now)....Aola Bay is being taken back little by little as the Japanese are very outnumbered (on east side of Guadalcanal Island)

NAVAL COMBAT & PLACEMENTS: US Navy again is back to duties in defense of US held ports as well as on call for combat support in US offensive advance...

1st JPG file showing the noose tightening on the Japanese southern defense perimeter lines.......

US Turn 20:

RETURN FILE: Japanese Turn 19: Japanese destroyers arrive off-shore Florida Islands (north of Guadalcanal Island) in support of a Japanese attack against Haleta ( worth 2 VPs)... The attack is successful and destroys the US defenders.... The now depleted Japanese on Guadalcanal are still jockeying for position to take this game to a draw (which is where it stands at turn 20 with 4 US turns remaining).....

US Turn 20: LAND COMBAT & ADVANCEMENT: Japanese are paying the price in defending the lines held near Matanikau as the US are racking up some impressive destroyed Japanese percentages though the Japanese manage to hold the line... Where the biggest gains for US in this round are located, happens to be on the east side of the island at Aola Bay where an impressive 92% of the Japanese defenders were destroyed in this turn.... 5 battalions + of US now are held off by 1 company- of Japanese defenders.... Aola Bay (with its 5 VPs) will fall back into US hands on next turn.........

NAVAL COMBAT & PLACEMENTS: US Navy again is back to duties in defense of US held ports as well as on call for combat support in US offensive advance...

JPG file showing the last depleted company of Japanese left (from what was a full regiment) on Aola bay.......

US Turn 21:

RETURN FILE: Japanese Turn 20: Japanese move south to shore up the new line forming around the right flank of the Japanese line where US are advancing towards Doma Cove & its 10 VPs that await (on west side of Guadalcanal Island)....On the Florida Islands, there is a regrouping of Japanese defenders trying to hold out at Haleta as US with support from Navy ships await an amphibious assault to attempt a retaking of the location.....A few attacks along the line are made by the Japanese which looks to have used up all the combat rounds in one attack phase.......

US Turn 21: LAND COMBAT & ADVANCEMENT: Japanese are REALLY paying the price in defending the lines now as overruns seem to be had at most locations along the line.......... The victory level jumps to SV levels with 3 US turns remaining as history looks to be repeating itself in the US push to rid the island of the Japanese defenders... On the east side of the island, at Aola Bay, the last company of Japanese defenders, surrender (and is eliminated).... At Heleta (on Florida Islands) the amphibious assault supported by the big guns of Hvy Cruiser #6 is a success as 2nd Battalion, 1st Marines retakes the position.... But the big news is the fall of Kokumbona on the west side of the Matanikau River where US, well supported by 11th Marines(artillery) as well as numerous Army artillery regiments, are advancing & infiltrating, creating a difficult defensive position for what looks to be a good portion of trapped Japanese defenders....

NAVAL COMBAT & PLACEMENTS: US Navy again is back to duties in defense of US held ports as well as on call for combat support in US offensive advance...

JPG file showing the US advance towards Doma Cove with 3 US turns remaining....

US Turn 22:

RETURN FILE: Japanese Turn 21: Japanese retake Kokumbona (10 VPs) bringing the Japanese back to within a ML result with 3 turns remaining... Numerous combats along the line but looks to have been 1 combat round before turns' end... Japanese now only control the west side of Guadalcanal...

US Turn 22: LAND COMBAT & ADVANCEMENT: Reinforcements arrive... But as a bold move, the reinforcements land at a location sure to be unsupplied upon supply phase of next turn... The move made is to tie down any chance of Japanese reinforcements back towards the front lines which is now quickly falling apart for the Japanese defenders... Kokumbona (and its' 10 VPs) is easily overrun and numerous trapped Japanese defenders surrender (are eliminated).... The game moves back to a SV level with 2 turns remaining for US.... The major points remaining (within reach of games' end) are at Doma Cove (10 VPs) & Aruligo Point (5 VPS)... Both locations possible, but not looking too probable for the US to take in time.....

NAVAL COMBAT & PLACEMENTS: US Navy moves to block all remaining important ports left with the few turns remaining...

JPG file showing the US advance towards Doma Cove with 2 US turns remaining....

US Turn 23:

RETURN FILE: Japanese Turn 22: Japanese attack a few places along the line, but the end is in sight....

US Turn 23: LAND COMBAT & ADVANCEMENT: US forces advance a good distance towards its final VP destinations remaining (if able to take any more before final turn left remaining)... Still showing a SV level for US as the Japanese held real estate on the NW tip of Guadalcanal Island dwindles...

NAVAL COMBAT & PLACEMENTS: US Navy moves to block all remaining important ports left with the few turns remaining...

JPG file showing the US advance towards Doma Cove with final US turn remaining....

Leftie..... Thanks for the pat on the back... Sadly I do not believe this scenario was considered for TOAW III mix of scenarios, but the scenario can be downloaded from SZO Scenario Archive files:

http://www.strategyzoneonline.com/forums/downloads.php?do=cat&id=6

I am still awaiting my copy of TOAW III from the mail which I hope is soon as I feel I am getting passed by by everyone else......

Coming into final turn/completion of game:Japanese turn 23

RETURN FILE: Japanese Turn 23: Japanese forces are transported to Taivu Point (5 VPs) where an amphibious raid dislodges the surprised US company of 132nd Army....... Along with support from Japanese destroyers coming down the 'Slot', the Japanese forces land an adhoc group of 3 companies in a desperate attempt to lessen the victory level (which still stands at SV for US forces)......

JPG... Showing Japanese landing at Taivu Point (5 VPs) before US turn 24 (final US turn)

US Turn 24: /Final turn for US forces...

US Turn 24: LAND COMBAT & ADVANCEMENT: US forces attempt to take out the newly arrived Japanese forces at Taivu Point by moving in Naval support units... But this attempt fails as the Japanese Navy is found to control the accesses leading to the point... Due to the US turn being the last, the operation to recover Taivu has been cancelled & all efforts are now made towards Doma Cove and its 10 VPs... SIDE NOTE:(any naval engagement would have cost additional combat round)...

The plan made was for 3rd Battalion, 132nd Army to amphibious assault Doma Cove direct, but not before attempting to advance the US tanks along the coast towards Doma Cove as a support to the assault... But as all risk go, the Japanese defenders cause the tank to eat up all remaining combat rounds before 3rd Battalion, 132nd Army get to attempt the amphibious assault of Doma Cove... The game stands at SV for US forces, but a much closer tilt due to the Japanese taking of Taivu Point & its 5 VPs in last turn... THIS! with the final turn of Japanese (turn 24) remaining....

NAVAL COMBAT & PLACEMENTS: US Navy moves to block all remaining important ports left with Japanese final turn remaining...

JPG file showing the US failed attempt towards Doma Cove made on the final US game turn....

RETURN FILE: Japanese Turn 24 (final turn & game end):

RETURN FILE: Japanese Turn 24 (final turn & game end): Japanese forces are transported to Koli Point (5 VPs) where an amphibious raid dislodges the surprised US company of 182nd Army....... With nothing the US can do but watch, the game ends at a victory level of MV (Marginal Victory) to US forces....

Epilogue: Outside of the surprised landings on Koli Point & Taivu Point by Japanese forces (both of which would have been considered suicide missions outside of the game points these landings generated late in the game), the scenario plays out very close along historic lines of the US landings and eventual removal of Japanese on & from Guadalcanal Island from Aug., 1942 to Jan., 1943... The US forces can & will loose the game early if mishandled as they are most vulnerable till turn 13 when the balance of power switches from Japanese forces back to US forces....

...A patient US player that manages to hold onto Henderson Air Field (which is the only supply on Guadalcanal once the temporary supply at Beach Red on turn 4 is removed) till the switch of power after turn 13, should from that point on, be able to continue a steady elimination & removal of Japanese from Guadalcanal Island...

IMO: The key to the game for Japan is a complete focus on control of the seas where within the first 3 turns (and especially on turn 1), all efforts should be made at eliminating all or as many US ship units as can be sent to the bottom of Sealake Chanel....

JPG showing overall completed game of Guadalcanal. (NOTE: Koli & Taivu Point control by Japan) This ends all After-Action Game Reports... Thanks for your interest in reading & hope you get a chance to play a game of Gualacanal 1942 for yourself....
