Personal faves are
Hendrix (I was blown away by the acoustic vid someone posted in Mila18 a few weeks ago),
SRV for Little Wing and Life By The Drop
Bernard Butler for his version of Girl Like You,
Jeff Healy when he doesn't get too widdly,
Mick Jones for driving the Clash,
Fred "Sonic" Smith for proving Patti's sonic backdrop,
Brian May for that mellow mellow sound
Whover it is from The Black Crows for that loose but tight sound
Neil Young for keeping grunge alive
Ally McErlaine because I love Texas and seeing him play live and acoustic with Sharleen Spiteri in Glasgow is one of my best memories.

There's more to great guitarists than solos. And I can't stand Clapton :)

Forget about your personal preferences in music style for a moment; we're talking about pure ability and the greatest of all time.

I have to ask what kind of drugs the editors at Rolling Stone were smoking when they cobbled together this pathetic excuse for a "greatest of all time" list. Perhaps they've given up on drugs and have taken to just eating dog food these days, who knows. At any rate, who in their right mind rated Kurt Cobain as the twelfth greatest guitarist of all time? WTF?

This is a joke, right? Joan Jett comes in right below David Gilmour, while Billy Gibbons is snubbed and doesn't make the list at all. And I agree with the guys making comments at Rolling Stone: How the hell did David Gilmour end up at 82?

Hendrix is also controversial as a #1 pick, as the comments at Rolling Stone make clear. Outside a core of dedicated fans, Hendrix' music has never been very popular. And on pure ability, there are others on that list that could certainly outplay Hendrix.

I have to give this some thought, but I'd certainly list Tom Morello a lot higher than #26, just based on the un-immitatible uniqueness of his sound. I don't get some of the choices that RS made in their list, but I often disagree with their critiques anyways.

In no order, I'd immediately have to place Hendrix, Clapton, May, Blackmore, Van Halen and SRV on the list.

Well, that's six already...last four would be tough to nail down...the Almans gotta be in there somewhere....down to three...

Favorite solo...WAY too many to nail down just ten...but Gillmore's solo in Comfortably Numb has always been a favorite and would have to be on the list. Same with Clapton/Alman's solo on Leyla.

Semper Fi!

Any list that leaves off Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers isn't much of a list. The guy isn't flashy and doesn't ever seek the limelight, but he's been cranking out sweet rifts for 30+ years.

One name that I haven't seen anyone challenge, either here or on RS, is B.B. King. Considering that Clapton, Gibbons, Gilmour and others all refer to him as a guitar legend says it all.

People have been speculating about how ZZ Top got its name for decades, but none of the band members would comment on it. Until now, that is. Billy Gibbons recently revealed that ZZ Top was named in honor of B.B. King. The band was originally going to be called Z.Z. King, but they decided that wasn't appropriate.

BTW, B.B. King still has a $100,000.00 reward out for recovery of the original 'Lucille.' If you can find it...

I'm with you Don on the inclusion of Kurt Cobain, and I'm actually a fan of Nirvana. However, he certainly doesn't belong in the 12th position let alone the whole list to begin with.

I will say that the inclusion of John Frusciante is a great call, but he should have been placed even higher on the list. Go listen to Stadium Arcadium and tell me that man isn't some sort of creative genius.

Equally, Tom Morello is also a good pick for the list if for the only reason that his sound is utterly unique, as King Scott has already accurately pointed out.

My biggest dissapointment is the lack of any mention of either Stone Gossard or Mike McCready from Pearl Jam. Even Flow, anyone?

Moreover, what the f**k is the obsession with The Ramones anyhow? You know what? The Ramones sucked. Deal with it.

Ok...so I'm biased towards my favorite band of all-time...Lynyrd Skynyrd.

But are you telling me they couldn't find room for Allen Collins?

What about Nancy Wilson? Not only a great guitarist, but also easy on the eyes.

How about Gene Simmons, why do you think they call him The God of Thunder? How about Ace Frehley?
