Deus Ex: Human Revolution...Ghost in the Shell...how my mind works. Anyhoo....

This is from March, but I didn't even realize this was in the works, so it's news to me. :)

Live-Action Ghost in the Shell Script Draft in Few Weeks

Laeta Kalogridis, the current screenwriter for Dreamworks and Steven Spielberg's planned live-action adaptation of Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell cyber-police manga, revealed on Tuesday evening that she will "turn in a draft in a few weeks." She expressed cautious optimism about the project, and indirectly noted an obstacle such a project faces in Hollywood: "Cross your fingers, guys — [it has a] female lead."
I'm a bigger fan of Cowboy Bebop, but I see the possibilities here.

As for a female lead being an obstacle...what feminist retro-world is she living in? Lara Croft, those Resident Evil movies, Ultraviolet...how many more strong female lead movies do we need?!?

Anybody have any additional info? I really don't follow GitS that much.

Wow!! Not quite sure how I missed this news! Ghost in the Shell is my favorite anime. It's one anime that I cannot see being made into a live action movie, I'd personally rather see another movie or maybe even another Gig in anime if I had it my way. As for the whole bs for having a female lead, if one ever watched the show the characters Batou and Togusa see a fair share of screen time as do the rest of the Section 9 team. It's amazing how they completely missed that. Also the show deals with some interesting themes and the world that the original creator of the series made is really interesting to me. The action is there but it usually comes after the team does a lot of investigating and sometimes the climax doesn't really have any action at all.

Did some quick snooping and found out sadly that they are doing it in 3D! Personally I'm NOT a fan of 3D at all and do not like it taking that direction. But it seems the writer and director both really like the series so I'm looking forward to a possible decent adaptation (AND NO DUMBING DOWN FOR AUDIENCES!!! My only request!!). Also the other anime Akira should be left alone period.

Seems like Hollywood is completely out of ideas and are doing remakes, video game movies, and now shredding anime as well. I'm just suprised they haven't mentioned anything about Neon Genesis Evangelion, quite surprising really.

Couple of articles:
Live Action Ghost In The Shell Movie Update

The movies script writer Laeta Lalogridis talks a little about the direction the live action version of the Sci-Fi Manga is taking...

Its been over 2 years since Stephen Spielberg was announced as the man to bring the popular Manga/Anime Ghost In The Shell to the screen. Since then, we have found out that Shutter Island writer (and Avatar executive producer) Laeta Kalogridis would be writing the script for Spielberg. While out promoting the release of Shutter Island, MoviesOnline caught up with Kalogridis and asked her about the latest on the adaptation...Rest of article
Another article... seems relatively old:
Dreamworks Remaking Ghost in the Shell as a 3-D Live Action Movie

It’s official… live action remakes of anime films are the next big thing. If Spielberg is on board, then surely there can be no debating it. Last year we heard that Production I.G. were looking into a live action adaptation of their own smash hit animated film Ghost in the Shell; this week we have news that Dreamworks has acquired the rights and are moving forward with the project. This film joins the growing list of anime adaptations in production that includes Akira, Speed Racer, Dragonball and James Cameron’s Battle Angel. Taking another cue from James Cameron, it looks like Dreamworks will also be doing Ghost in the Shell in 3-D...Rest of article

AND NO DUMBING DOWN FOR AUDIENCES!!!
How is that supposed to work when producers expect it to become a success? Ghost in the Shell is great, always gets me in the mood for some Neotokyo (Hl² mod). Best Movie-Game adaption sofar imho.
Anyway hearing some Yoko Kanno works always has me bowing down to her greatness. Would a GitS movie revive the Seatbelts? :smoke:

Hahaha good point! :D And oh really? Will see what that is about. And I was thinking that the Cowboy Bebop movie has more potential for the revival but I have yet to hear her named for the soundtrack/score...

I hate 3-D too, but you might as well get used to it. It is Hollywood's way of trying to compete with video games. It's also a heck of a lot easier to get people into the theaters with such gimmickry than it is to actually devote the time and resources to a smart story with good acting.

As for Spielberg helming GitS...there is danger here. His Minority Report was often pitched as Spielberg's attempt at making his own Blade Runner...and the movie was anything but Blade Runner. Like all Spielberg sci-fi, it was full of fanciful (and silly) tech, along with action scenes that bordered on the cartoonish. It also wasn't dark and moody in the least, even though Tom Cruise did his "I'm so frenetic!" spiel to try to bring some seriousness to the plot. I'm not sure Speilberg is the man for GitS. Ridley Scott, yes; Spielberg...not so much. If only Ridley would get his head out of the medieval ages - a period he has proven he is ill-equipped to interpret time and again - and return to sci-fi.

Glad I'm not the only one hating it! And well it's pretty sad if that's the best they can come up with! And true but still... it's annoy how they are willing to sugar coat and take the easy road on stories when there is so much potential in most of them.

Possibly... But I've never seen GitS anywhere near Blade Runner's dark and moody atmosphere (well maybe the first movie) while thinking back on it... Minority Report was alright if it wasn't so dang shiny. And what sci-fi movies has Scott done? I'm not exactly up with the times. Also how much of GitS have you seen S.T.??

In one sense, the 3D movie push is actually clever. What Hollywood is doing is turning America's movie theaters into indoor amusement parks. This started with IMAX - something that succeeded wildly - and now continues with 3D. Theaters aren't about storytelling anymore, they are about indoor roller coaster rides.

I've only seen a few episodes from GitS: Stand Alone Complex. I find the premise interesting, but the actual episode plots always seem to be strangely confused and rather flat in delivery. I've never seen the original movie but intend to, probably once the new movie is released. :D

From what I have seen from Stand Alone Complex, the tone isn't as dark as Blade Runner, but it seems to want to go in that direction at times. I think it would be better if they actually just gave in and went no holds bared dark and moody as it would make the show more interesting, sort of like certain episodes of Cowboy Bebop.

Exactly! :D Spielberg can't help himself. His sci-fi has more in common with The Jetsons than it does with mainstream sci-fi.

And what sci-fi movies has Scott done?
Two classics: Alien & Blade Runner!

I see that too but feel like I'm getting cheated for theatrics... kinda like a Disney ride that doesn't put out....so-to-speak o_O

Yeah you have to watch some episodes a few times over to get it haha. And even if some plots are a bit flat, I just focus on how their "world" works and how things might be in that type of environment. And I'll shamelessly say you also have to see both seasons and the other movies just because... even if it doesn't interest you that much ;)

And no where is it close to being as dark as Blade Runner but it has its moments but not to the point where it puts you in a mood like Cowboy Bebop. And yeah that would be good to see a more darker GitS.

Ah! Great movies indeed. Though what has he done recently?

P.S. Cowboy Bebop's live adaptation was brilliant imo... Firefly and Serenity... :p
