Scenario - 10_00: Getting Started – The Battle at Fulda

Briefing - Town of Fulda, 60 miles east of Frankfurt, June 10th 1985: After crossing the East German border in an early morning surprise attack, the Warsaw Pact’s 8th Guards Army is advancing quickly towards Fulda, the home of the American 1st Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (ACR) and HQ. The battle plans are well rehearsed and the troopers from 11th ACR scramble to their posts. The task is simple, the 11th ACR must delay the Warsaw Pact long enough for NATO reinforcements to arrive, this will be at least 24 hours and maybe longer depending on the success of the NATO air campaign. The next day will be grim for NATO...

Warsaw Pact Turn 2
Russian recon units were engaged by C Company before they hit the minefield. 2 BRDM2’s were confirmed kills.
MI24 Hind squadron appeared to the south of C Company and engaged however none of the vehicles were lost.

NATO Turn 2
A flight of F16 was called in to attack the Russian units condensing to the NE of Fulda but SAM coverage prevented them making an attack run.
Howitzer HE fire was directed onto these units.
C Company was now low on ammo and would have to withdraw after the next Soviet attack.
A and D companies withdrew across the Fulda to begin digging in.
The Recon platoon used their Huey’s to take control of the crossing to the South where the Fulda broke up into a crossable stream.

Warsaw Pact Turn 3
C Company was subjected to a short artillery barrage prior to a combined attack by dismounted infantry and BMP2’s. The artillery deployed mines in front of C company prevented the Russians overwhelming the Cavalry but, running low on ammo and with the MI24 still lurking to their South 3 vehicles were lost
Two regiments of T72’s were spotted to the North of B company

NATO Turn 3
C Company withdrew to Recon platoons position losing a Bradley as they were pulling out.
With the T72’s spotted B company pulled back to their secondary position to the east of Fulda. An additional 2-3 hour delay would allow the rest of the ACR to continue digging in on the west bank. During the withdrawl the company engaged the T62’s who had attacked C company in the flank disrupting them for the loss of a single vehicle.
The Cobra’s of the Aeroweapons platoon used stalked the T72 regiments to the North as they deployed to attack B company destroying one of the tanks when it briefly emereged into a forest clearing.
The final artillery mines were deployed on the east side of the main bridge in Fulda.

Warsaw Pact Turn 4
A Russian recon company moving in column ran into B company losing 2 BRDM-2’s
Attack Helo Troop destroyed another 4 BRDM-2’s from a different recon company as it tried to skirt around the east of Fulda

NATO Turn 4
Improved positions were completed on the West bank of the Fulda.
HQ recovered from the devastating dawn air attacks and was back in contact with NATO V Corps.
One Kiowa was lost scouting the heights east of Fulda. However a large build-up of Russian forces was spotted and HQ ordered B Company to withdraw. A flight of F4F's was called in to attack the Russian tank concentrations but it was unable to penetrate the SAM coverage. Artillery fire was used however minimal damage was witnessed by the Kiowa’s before pulling out.
C Company crews were able to move tank main rounds out of their storage bays and moved out to ambush any incursion to the south east of Fulda.

Warsaw Pact Turn 5
Russian’s occupied the heights to the east of Fulda.
A Company destroyed 3 BRDM-2 from a reconnaissance company exploring the bridge defences. They were followed by two motorized rifle regiments of dismounted infantry and BTR-70’s that took ~80 casualties from A Company and the artillery deployed minefield. Finally one of the T72 regiments moved into position opposite the bridge and the Aeroweapons platoon was able to destroy 2 thanks to their thermal imaging.
A Company was the subjected to significant artillery fire including rocket launches that cost the Company 2 vehicles.
To the south 4 BRDM-2’s of a recon company were destroyed by the newly position C Company.

NATO Turn 5
Attack Helo Troop moved out of its cover but ran into a motorized rifle regiment losing 1 helicopter and disrupting the unit.
To avoid being isolated C Company moved back to occupy B Company position which in turn moved to D Company improved position. The tank company occupied the rubble to the south of the bridge to deter any amphibious attempts from the Russians and protect the flanks of A Company.
A Company remained in ambush rather than moving out to engage the numerous Russian regiments that were not yet assembled to cross the bridge.

03:00 11 June 1985 (Dawn)

Warsaw Pact Turn 6
T72’s south of the bridge opened fire on A Company destroying 1 vehicle. D Company fired on the flank of the Tank Regiment destroying 2 tanks and disrupting the unit.
The Russians preparing to assault the bridge moved into column formation under terrible conditions. Fire from A and D companies together with carrying out the manoeuvre in a mine field resulted in 12 vehicles being destroyed together with some infantry.
A massive artillery bombardment preceeded the assault however only 1 of A Company’s vehicles was put of action. The assault was repulsed with the loss of another A Company vehicle but in return 30 Russian infantry and 2 more T72s were destroyed as they attempted the bridge crossing.
To the south C Company destroyed 4 T62’s and 70 infantry from its new position disrupting 2 BMP2 infantry regiments. However return fire from the tank regiment and a 3rd infantry regiment in BMP2’s destroyed 2 of C Company’s vehicles.
B Company caught an infantry regiment supported by BTR70’s as it attempted to flank C Company causing ~40 losses on the Russians.

NATO Turn 6
B Company opened fire from their improved position on the infantry that was now stuck in the open. ~90 casualties were caused with the Russians claiming 1 vehicle in return.
D Company destroyed a T72 from the already disrupted unit opposite it before pulling back and joining A Company defending the bridge

Warsaw Pact Turn 7
  • The Russians captured the undefended southern crossing.
  • Russian bombers joined the artillery barrage at the river crossing causing the first casualties in D companies where a bomb penetrated the weaker top armour of one the cavalry’s M1’s.
  • The assault on the combined forces of A and D Company’s was a failure for a second time for the Russians. ~75 men and 8 vehicles were lost with only a single vehicle being lost by 11ACR.
NATO Turn 7
  • ~60 men waiting in BTR70’s and 2 T72’s were destroyed by F-4F squadrons from the German Air Force and F-16’s from the USAF. This coupled with accurate fire from the Aero-weapons platoon in their AH-1’s disrupted the final regiments attempting to cross the bridge. The immediate danger there appeared to have been removed. D Company added to the confusion by destroying 3 T72’s across the river before moving back into cover.
  • C Company withdrew into Fulda to become the reserve and recover from 9 hours of ambushing Russian forces.

09:00 11 June 1985

Warsaw Pact Turn 8
  • Out of sight of the 11ACR a Russian infantry regiment mounted in the amphibious BTR70 crossed the river Fulda and moved into the rubble that D Company had occupied throughout the night. The Russian’s were subjected to fire from A and D Companies that destroyed ~30 infantry when their personnel carries there hit.
  • 1 vehicle from C Company was lost to artillery fire supporting the river crossing
NATO Turn 8
  • Fire from B Company and the Aero-weapons platoon kept the single Russian regiment across the river pinned back. D and B Company prepared for an assault to push the Russians back across the river before other Russians regiments could reinforce the beachhead.
  • The Russians broke as soon as the assault started but with a river crossing under fire meaning certain death the conscripts were forced to fight where they stood. ~190 Russians died without inflicting any casualties on the 11ACR but the beachhead still existed. A Company followed and again the broken Russians clung on, over 60 died but they were not pushed off of the west bank.

Warsaw Pact Turn 9
  • The failure of the 11ACR to push the lone Russian regiment back into the Fulda meant they could be reinforced by 3 further infantry regiments. This time they were mounted in BMP2’s posing significantly more danger to the M1’s and M3’s of the cavalry.
  • Fire from A Company disrupted one of the crossing regiments but the other two made it without incident.
  • Two T72 regiments that had been so unsuccessful in trying to force the bridge crossing now moved to the river bank opposite the crossing to provide covering fire.
  • Russian artillery fire destroyed one of C Company’s vehicles and disrupting it.
  • A Tank battalion of T62’s attacked B Company from the south with one vehicle lost to each side. This was followed by fire from a T72 regiment that destroyed 2 more of B Company’s tanks.
NATO Turn 9
  • A squadron of German F4F’s caused sufficient damage to the infantry still inside their BMP2’s so as to disrupt the final unit.
  • The AH-1’s of the Aero-weapons team turned their attention from the beachhead to the T72 regiment threatening B Company and 1 T72 was destroyed by the TOW missiles.
  • The Howitzer targeted the far bank of the Fulda and were able to disrupt one of the T72 regiments that was covering the beachhead. Direct fire from D Company disrupted the other T72 regiment. Fighting in the streets of Fulda was not the suited to the 11ACR and casualties continued to mount up in the companies.

Hopefully those reading have enjoyed this AAR, it was fun to write it up.

By the end the Russian's were a spent force as the two attacks across the bridge and the amphibious assault caused most of their casualties.

The timely withdrawl of B and C Companies was the key to the NATO victory even though they did very little damage (close to 1:1 losses) they forced the Russian's to deploy much sooner than they would otherwise have liked.
