Hi,

I have an immobile vehicle in Melee with an enemy infantry squad.

My understanding is that the vehicle holds the infantry in melee but that the infantry DO NOT hold the vehicle in melee meaning that the infantry can only attack in the CC phase but the vehicle can fire at the infantry during fire phases and then also attack in the CC phase (assuming it survives the infantry ccc attack first). The vehicle could start and move out of the hex during it's movement phase but as it is immobile this is not an option.

Assuming the above is correct during a fire phase of the next player turn after the melee occurred a vehicle friendly to the infantry tries to fie at the enemy vehicle in the melee hex with it's MA (MG's do not fire). A11.15 indicates that fire into a melee effects both enemy and friendly units.

What happens in this situation effectively the vehicle is not held in melee but the infantry are in melee with the tank also the tank is in bypass and the infantry are in a railcar hex.

What happens?:

A) Does the tank fire into the hex applying the different to hits modifiers against the vehicle and infantry and then assuming hits against both apply a TK against the vehicle and a IFT using the Ap He equivalency against the infantry
B) As the vehicle is not technically held in Melee the shot is against the tank only and does not effect the infantry held in melee
C) something else

If the roles were reversed and the tank firing in was freindly the the vehiclal held in melee rather than the infantry and fired HE and MG's what would be effected in the melee hex?

Regards

Simon

Per the following Q&A, the vehicle is not considered to be in melee when the infantry is attacked.

A7.4 & A11.15
A British 3-3-8 is locked in OG in melee with a CE, stopped German AFV. In Prep fire, German infantry fire into the melee, getting a 6 on the 8 FP column. The halfsquad clearly undergoes a 1MC. Does the German crew undergo an NMC? In other words, is a unit which is not "locked in melee" (such as a tank) nevertheless a "melee unit"

A. No. The AFV is not a "melee unit." {2}

If the vehicle is not in melee, an ordnance attack using the VTT can target it without affecting the infantry. If the attacker uses area target type, both units will be affected.

We cannot target our own units except when they are in melee. A friendly AFV (not in melee) and an enemy infantry unit (in melee), would that prevent an ATT or IFT attack because the friendly AFV cannot be targeted?

Using the ITT would not hit/attack the friendly AFV. Using the ATT could, but it is allowed by the last sentence of A7.4.

I think, since the AFV is not held in Melee, that it will be attacked if ATT is declared.
C3.33 ...All (including friendly) non-Aerial units in the target hex can be hit (even by WP), except for those immune as per 3.4 ...
I don't think the AFV is "immune".
