Festung Budapest CG-III – “City Of Eternal Heroes”
6th February 1945 – Session 50

Soviet Turn 4
The Soviet steamroller finally breaks through.

RPh
No wind changes.
Soviet MMG repaired in XX17, 628 picks up German HMG in YY13, 248 self-rallies in the middle of ‘The Field of Blood’. 447 rallied in II18. 628 rallied in OO17. 527 rallied in ZZ15.
Axis 338 rallied in CC15. Remaining Panther manages to recover from Shock with no ill effects.

PFPh
122 ART gets smoke into DDD12 from FFF14. LL20 gets smoke into GG10, blinding the unshocked Panther… then same mortar pins leader in BB13, and reDMs squad there.
Tower of power in XX17 aims at concealed units in VV14 pinning 658/DC that was attempting to attack adjacent 122 ART gun. This gun now changes CA at 658/DC, the first shot and the intensive subsequent shot only reassure the 658/DC of the TLC the Soviets intend for them.
Tower of power in II18 aim at PP14 (658/LMG), to first HS and then eliminate unit with rate tear.
FG at DD15 results in malf’d LMG in EE17.

MPh
Troops in the southern sector move around Axis troops trying to draw fire to no avail. However an 8-1 leader move to assist 628 with the German HMG and breaks under fire from ZZ11. 628 runs through the resultant resid and is CR’d – the remaining HS gets eliminated when it continues its move into ZZ12.
Troops in the rail yards push forward.
The inevitable 8-0/DC then runs from back field to threaten the troops upstairs in AAA13 forcing final fire from AAA12, who through ammo shortage reduce to 447 and throw away their LMG. The DC gets placed – yuck!
In the northern sector troops start to cross the Field of Blood drawing fire, and unconcerned with a few MC failures. It all draws D1F…
A DC gets placed in DD15 on the HS/FT, the FT has no fuel!
The Panther tries to fire out of its smoky location and pins 628 bearing down on it.
T34/85 moves to FF16, into AT minefield however does not trigger any mines and then moves out with no damage either – its target is the smoked Panther. The Panther fires and misses, the T34 rolls up close in CC12.
The first armour column of reinforcements gets to the edge of the Field of Blood.
A fanatic 628/FT and 7-0 run across the field to the abandoned Panther in GG11.
The second armoured column moves slowly through the buildings on northern edge. As do a number of troops in support of the armoured columns.
The third ammo supply building now is assaulted, a concealed unit moves to SS18, concealment is lost in RR15 due to ‘bump’ by 458 in QQ16. Troops move across rubble in OO16 in preparation of getting into the Southern Railway Station.

DFPh
Cheap easy shots from FFF10 CR both broken BVR units in FFF12 and ELR 7-0 (feels a bit dirty :))
628 in SS15 breaks 458 in UU15, RR15 on rate tear reduces 2 458 units to 1 broken 237!

AFPh
Preparation for the DC placed in AAA13 is two shots that get unit encircled!
The 658 that killed 3 HS breaks under fire.
57LL AT in SS17 manned by squad gets great hit on SS15 and breaks fanatic 658!
Flame created in DDD35.

RtPh
Soviet/BVR units all rout back safely.
However, the German units are running out of space in the northern sector, 838 is eliminated from board edge in BB13. Broken units in the railway station retreat to the eastern edge of the building.

APh
Fanatic 628/7-0 CX in CC with Panther in GG10.
628 into CC with pinned 9-1 in BB13.
628/8-0 into CC with pinned 338 in BB15.
628 into CC with 338/9-1 in CC15.
328 and 628 into CC with pinned 338 in DD15.
Concealed unit into CC with pinned 548 in VV14.
Concealed unit into CC with broken unit in PP13.

CCPh
VV14: concealed units decline to fight and suffer no casualties so keep concealment for next turn.
PP13: 126 eliminated.
DD15: Axis eliminates 328, ongoing melee.
BB15: 338 eliminated.
CC15: Axis ambush and kill 628.
BB13: 9-1 wounded, ongoing melee.
GG10: Soviet troops eliminate Panther – yuck!

Soviet: 15 (70) 348x2, 838, 126, 338, Panther
Axis: 8 (25) 328x3, 248x3, 628
Net Stone Locations: claimed (lots) + potential (lots) (tbd + tbd)

Axis Turn 4
Is there any Axis defence left in the northern sector? Maybe a ghost division!

RPh
No wind changes.
Axis 468 rallied in CCC9, Hungarian conscript squad rallies in YY11. 338 picks up Soviet LMG in CC15.
Soviet BVR rallies in EEE16.

PFPh
FFF10 fires into FFF12 to get some easy casualties (full of broken BVR units). VV12 fires adjacent and breaks 8-1/347BVR in WW12.

MPh
Southern sector units shuffle to skulk but keep in contact with Soviet units.
336 AM into road under the cover of the burning wreck in XX11.
Troops in Railway Station AM away, while keeping one hex of the station controlled.
The remaining troops in northern sector retreat to the cellar in CC15.

DFPh
Tower of Power in II18 fires at RR12, breaks 658. 9-2 stack in PP15 fires at RR13, breaks fanatic 658!!!
Many shots at conscript in XX11 finally pin it!
Mortar shot at 658 in BBB12 breaks it!
However mortar in AAA19 actually malf’s… then 122 ART malf’s in sympathy!

AFPh
OPP fire in AAA12 suffers Ammo Shortage resulting in a fanatic 436!
Flame created in EEE34.

RtPh

Routs out of the Station leaves 1 squad holding control of it.
BVR units in WW12 eliminated for FTR.

APh
Shuffle back to front line in southern sector.
Into CC in WW12.
Cellar move to cellar in DD15, underneath an ongoing melee.

CCPh
DD15: ongoing melee.
BB15: 338 eliminated.
BB13: 9-1 is killed but kills HS on way out.
WW12: no result, into melee.

Soviet: 2 (72) 9-1
Axis: 5 (30) 8-1, 347, 248

Soviet Turn 5

Axis defence shatters in the north and centre, withstands some of the pressure in the south… but is it futile? Not for the Third Reich!

RPh
No wind changes.
Soviet 122 ART is repaired, Soviet 628 rallies in EE10 on the other side of the Field of Blood… 628 rallies in GG16. 8-1 rallies in XX13 and Soviet LMG eliminated in WW14.
Axis 658 rallied in RR12.

PFPh
Tower of Power in XX17 breaks 436 in ZZ12. Captured HMG breaks permanently on first shot in XX13. Repaired 122 ART in VV15 breaks/ELRs squad to 447SS in TT14.
Tower of power in II18L2 DMs RR12 again.
Units in cellar in DD15 survive a lot of Prep firepower.

MPh
The units in cellar in DD15 are now target number one! 458 in CC16 drops into cellar alongside and survives D1F. Second 458 runs across and down into cellar in CC15 and is pinned by SFF. 628 runs into road in DD16 and FPF CRs it which then fails MC.
10-3/DC then gets into cellar, and FPF from DD15 breaks the Axis units! A bit reckless maybe…
8-0/628 rush map edge up to BB12, picking up Axis FT on the way.
Troops in the Field of Blood push forward to LL7, and to H7, and to FF9. Other troops in northern sector move forward trying to check and clear stone locations.
Soviet troops close in on the final location of the Central Railway Station, 458 gets broken, another gets CR’d which is pinned. DFF at 628/LMG which gets to SS15, then resid DMs another 628 getting to SS15.
Massive Tower of Power gets into Railway Station (RR15), nothing can fire at it! And 9-2 gets to QQ15.
FPF from SS14 results in Ammo Shortage pinning the firer. Then BVR units attack from southern side and get adjacent in UU14.
Southern sector just move forward where possible (often only 1 hex), Axis hold fire for the moment.
Armour moves out and across Field of Blood (MM7, GG10, CC11, NN7, LL11, NN12, JJ11).

DFPh
PSK shot at infantry X’s out the PSK, then the IFT shot ammo shortages the 658 down to 548.
No other shots.

AFPh
Mortar shot at BBB12 HoB on broken unit, BH to a berserker.
Other shots get multiple acquisitions for future shots.

RtPh
Axis vol break BBB12L0 and SS14.
Soviet routs succeed, however VV12 447 eliminated. Same for 447 in TT14. Central Railway Station is abandoned to the Soviets!!!

APh
Advance forward along frontline.
2 BVR units go upstairs into CC with fanatic 658 in BBB12.

CCPh
WW12: 137 eliminated, ongoing melee.
BBB12: 336x2 eliminated, ending melee.
DD15: Axis eliminates 628/LMG, Soviets eliminate 338 ending melee.

Soviet: 7 (79) 447x2, 338, 9-1,
Axis: 9 (39) 328, 248, 137, 628, 336x2
Net Stone Locations: claimed (lots) + potential (lots) (enough)

Axis Turn 5
Axis now plans for the last stand in the southern sector… mainly because there is no other stand possible, an end of day dr of 1 will reduce the hurt (a bit!).

RPh
No wind changes.
Axis 338 rallies with leader creation in BB15 (7-0). 658 rallies in RR12.
Soviet MMG repaired in XX17, BVR rallies in EEE16. 458 rallies in QQ15.

PFPh
658 in BBB15 fires downstairs and breaks 336BVR. FG into CCC13 results in 658 reducing to 548 due to ammo shortage.
458 pinned in RR13 from adjacent shot.

MPh
Hungarian conscript HS moves adjacent to broken BVR units in FFF11, and again available southern sector units shuffle to skulk but keep in contact with Soviet units.
336 moves out from smoke in XX11, draws attention and breaks fire the ‘staring’.
Troops north of the station split to create multiple targets, and then place DC into RR13 successfully.
Troops move to BB16, but get destroyed by Tower of Power in EE17.
PzIV relocates to XX7 to guard! the Field of Power.

DFPh
Tower of power fires at RR12, breaking 658, and pinning 8-1, therefore no GO troops close to the station.
AFV shot unconceals Hungarian 8-0 in RR11, then he breaks.
Shot into melee in WW12 breaks both the BVR HS and the 658SS, leaving no GO units in melee, they both have to run away!
BBB12 pinned upstairs so cannot get downstairs in APh, then CCC12 548 breaks/ELRs under fire, less and less GO troops defending, this could get ugly!!??!!??
9-1 breaks and is encircled in SS11.

AFPh
DC causes no casualties in RR13.

RtPh
447 gets back to BBB10, 336 gets to VV10, RR12 units FTR
Soviet units rout safely.

APh
Southern sector moves back in including advance into BBB12 by 548. Also concealed vs concealed in AAA13.
Flame becomes a blaze in FFF37.

CCPh
BBB12: 336 eliminated but takes HS with it.
AAA13: Soviet units ambush and withdraw to ZZ12.
WW12: Axis broken units withdraw into road under of smoke in XX11.

End of Day dr: 1 – YES, the nightmare ends for this 24 hrs, OMG what a pasting! A Soviet Victory.

Soviet: 7 (86) 338, 7-0, 658x2, 238
Axis: 2 (41) 336
Net Stone Locations: 78

Refit Phase
The frontline moves into the Field of Blood, and the weather improves. The mist continues, but the ground snow melts away.

The loss of the Ammo Buildings bites and the Axis now suffer Ammo Shortage Level 4.

The Axis sniper is restored to 2, the Soviet sniper remains at 5.

The Axis gets another 4 GCPP bonus due to having no scenario victories.

The Soviet T34s get off for the bonus SCPP. Three separate Soviet forces find themselves behind the frontline, and therefore will start with Ammo shortage themselves.

The sun rises on the 7th February 1945, and there is a wall of Soviet soldiers ready to break through the Last Stand.

Is there no opportunity for the Soviets to capture/re-crew that abandoned Panther during the RePh? (Obviously they could do it during play if they want to.) Even if immobilised I would think that it could be put to some good use for a little while ....

I captured the panther as my first action during the movement phase of turn one
as far as I can tell there was no opportunity to do it during the refit phase. So I just left it till the new day

As for the good use, the CVP gain is more than adequate. If I get to shoot something with it!! great I will
but I'm just looking forward to lots of CVP at the end

FB17.6131 AFV: ... a) Each abandoned, non-Isolated AFV may remain abandoned, or may be remanned and operated (as per A21.22) by any Retained unit of that side. ...
And then section d) gives you a chance to fix the immobilisation.

(I'm assuming the Panther was not in an Isolated area.)

Soviet Turn 1

Soviet goal is to remove concealment as much as possible, by forcing D1F or moving into concealment hexes.

RPh
No wind changes. No Soviet aircraft arrive :).

PFPh
SMOKE fills the air especially in LL2, OO8, LL12, XX10, VV11, TT10, FFF11, EEE12, QQ9. These will help with crossing streets.
Several towers of power go OPP FIRE!

MPh
In the northern sector a large contingent of communist BVR units get ready to assault towards the castle walls, starting HS that searches only the road in DD9.
A full BVR unit gets wiped out in BB9… by German HS in CC9. However German HS breaks firing FPF. Soviet crew captures immobile Panther in HH12.
Soviets move along building gaining stone locations next to Field of Blood. BVR units move across the same field, and 2 German HMGs fail due to Ammo Shortage!
Troops push AT gun into LL10.
Mortar on castle hill goes Low Ammo on first shot???
In central sector, the Soviets use SMOKE to move forward, some defensive but no results.
In southern sector, major push to remove ? works as Axis defenders lay down biggest residual net so far, but it is not enough, only a K result (248).
An attempt to place DC by 8-0 eventually fails with breaking the 8-0 in DDD12. Advance into EEE12 draws fire that only breaks LMG…
Ammo shortage reduces 658 to 548 in EEE10 in SFF.
Move to front line in SS11 by 458x2, 8-1 behind cover of smoke.
447 tries to cross road in FF8, but MMG in PP3 breaks/ELRs the Soviets to conscript status but Soviet sniper then breaks 348 in XX6.
Reinforcing armour with riders pour in from the west and north edges.

DFPh
OBA gets called in with 2 batteries; one with SR into MM8, the second SR into WW7.
Mortars started to fire, but triggered Soviet sniper which again hit XX6 and eliminated the broken HS. Low ammo strikes another mortar.
KK7 fires and ammo shortage reduces the 447 to a conscript.

AFPh
HMG stack fires into II6, and break both 548 and 9-1.
JJ7 fires into KK7 and breaks 436 conscript.
MMG stack fires into AAA12 and breaks 658.
Spraying fire pins squads in DDD11 and CCC12.
Several mortars get acquisition across battlefield. Flamethrower breaks/ELRs 527 to 2 broken 227s in VV10.
527 breaks/ELRs/disrupts down to 227.

RtPh
Axis vol break in CCC12 and DDD11.
All Soviet and Axis routs succeed.

APh
Advance forward along frontline gaining stone locations where possible. 458 walks into minefield in OO7, no effect.
Units go into CC in EEE11.

CCPh

EEE11: no result, form HtH Melee.

Soviet: 8 (8) captured Panther (immobile), 348, 227
Axis: 3 (3) 336, 248
Net Stone Locations: claimed (8) + potential (1) (8 + 1)

I admire folks that can play high counter density scenarios like this. This one is dense even by vasl standards. I don't know how you keep straight what is where. Nicely done and glad you're having fun.

I'm not sure if the Soviets should get any CVP for the captured Panther. As I posted above, by FB17.6131, they already owned it at the start of the scenario -- i.e., it was captured in the RePh. (NRBH, and maybe I'm missing some other factor.)

Axis Turn 1

How strong are the remnants of the Axis defence – is there a backbone?

RPh
No wind changes. No Axis aircraft arrive :(. No-one rallies.

PFPh
OBA comes in and eliminates 336 in MM8 and breaks 2 adjacent 336s.
Mortar goes Low Ammo due to shortage in LL1. HMG in VV4 breaks 336 in PP8 but Soviet sniper pins concealed fanatic 348 in L1 of PP6. Then HMG malfs on next shot.

MPh
Many many skulk moves to try to avoid Soviet FP.
PzIV comes in from East edge to try to bolster Castle Hill in JJ4, troops then move to force ? loss in II6, revealing 7-0 leader.
658 then moves towards T34 in the field of blood, drawing fire and pinning squad… but resulting in Soviet sniper picking out flamethrower squad in UU9 and breaking it.

DFPh
Many shots set up acquisition.
Broken 238 eliminated in BB8. FT squad broken in UU9. Tower of power in WW12 hit concealed 336 and disrupt it in WW9, then pin 336 and break another 336 in XX8 and for fun then break 348 in XX6 and finally eliminates 348 in WW6.
Another tower of power shreds 537 into 2x227 in ZZ11.

AFPh
Very little fire, all not effective.
2 flames created in DDD33 and DDD34.

RtPh
Axis units manage to rout back towards a semblance of safety.
Soviet units rout out of the Field of Blood.

APh
Axis advances are really retreats! Except in TT10, hs takes on 2 squads!

CCPh
EEE11: no result, HtH Melee continues.
TT10: no result, forms HtH Melee.

Soviet: 2 (10) 238, 348
Axis: 3 (6) 336, 126
Net Stone Locations: claimed (0) + potential (0) (8 + 1)

Fairly certain if you had taken the double CVP/VP at the end of last scenario/CG date you would not gain add'l VP for its dest. However, the way we play it is the capturing side receives only the normal (not-doubled) CVP when initially captured and only the additional VP when withdrawn, or destroyed by the original owner, regardless of the CG date. This seems to be the easiest way to determine CVP (if you capture a couple & they move around a bit, you don't have to remember which was captured on which CG date) though it may leave you a little short on the CG date of the initial capture.

You get initial CVP for capturing a thing, then if it's still captured at the end of the scenario that's when you get the bonus CVP (A26.222). Of course the Chapter A rules don't discuss what happens when you capture something between scenarios, which is a CG concept (and the CG rules need to address that -- and I'm too lazy to look it up right now). My question was if that you capture something before the scenario has even started, when do you get those CVP? In the new scenario date? Or "never" (i.e., the CVP only count for purposes of calculating CG purchase DRM etc., but do not count for the scenario)?

As for the captured side losing the CVP due to the captured thing being lost (in a future scenario date) -- I have no idea. Again, I think the CG rules need to specifically address that point, and again, I'm too lazy to look :) .

Soviet Turn 2

Soviet goal is total annihilation!!! They may succeed.

RPh
No wind changes. Soviet aircraft appear in the skies – yikes.
Soviet rally 7-0 in DDD12, 248 in DDD16. 426 in GG9, 458 in YY14.
Axis rally 9-1 in LL4, 548 in OO5 and repair HMG in VV5. 2x658 in BBB9, 658 in CCC9.

PFPh
SMOKE fills the air again in XX11, VV5, UU11.
Counter-mortar shot breaks mortar crew in SS3, than another counter mortar shot breaks second mortar crew in LL1.
658 broken in JJ5, tower of power breaks and disrupts 336 in XX8, CR’s 336 in XX7, then kills the remaining HS.

MPh
In the southern sector significant push to hit the strongest defenders, with DCs placed on key building hexes.
Assault along edge of field of Blood draws DF and breaks BVR 336 in TT8. 458 breaks in XX10 from MMG revealing adjacent in YY10. However Soviet sniper breaks Axis HS in melee in TT10.
Minefield gets 336 and CR’s it in OO7. 336 gets pinned in SS9, and 336 gets disrupted in QQ8 all fire from the building in the field of blood.
Ammo shortage reduces 468SS to 447SS in UU4, trying to hit 336 in PP7.
BVR units climb hill on northern edge, claiming ground from Axis. T34s maraud across the Field of Blood, getting heavy weapons into thick of Axis defences.
Reinforcing tanks come on, making at least 12 AFVs on the battlefield :::L

DFPh
Axis OBA SR is inaccurate and moves to BBB13, a difficult place to see from the east edge, no matter the height of the OBO.
Hungarian OBA moves FFE:2 to OO8 and proceeds to break 336 in OO8, CR 336 in OO7, break 336 in PP7.
With Ammo Shirtage at 4, it proves very difficult to find a PF!
447 broken in MM6 from PBF. DFF from CCC11 breaks 7-0, fanatic328 in DDD11

AFPh
120 mtr malfs in LL13 firing at UU4.
DC explodes in ZZ11 and ELRs 537AE, DC explodes in CCC11 with no effect!

RtPh
Soviet routs mainly succeed, however the Field of Blood claims BVR squad in TT8 for FTR. 126x2 eliminated from FFE in PP8, NN8.
