Guys-

I'm working on my ASLOK playlist and would like some input from others about their favorite (one or two) scenarios that are "must-plays". So far I have these, which I have not yet played:

-Smoke The Kents [GD-C]
-The Commissar's House [4]
-Shoestring Ridge [61]
-The Cactus Farm [J50]
-anything from Beyond The Beachhead [HoB]

Hello Chas,

Here are two for me:

Oldie-

A104 In Front of the Storm.

French attacking Germans at a bridge crossing. Frog H39 platoon moving tanks (incredible tanks!) vs. German Doorknocker that just can't seem to penetrate. This scen came down to the last move for me last time, and my Frenchies got shot down on the bridge. Just a bit short!

Newer-

SP83 Boeinked

Churchills vs. Stugs, British on the attack, what could be better! The one time I played it, came down to the last turn in the steeple. This scen rocks.

JMO

Chas,

Try Hitler's Samurai FF12 (HOB. I played it last year at ASLOK and it came down to the last possible shot of the game. A real nail bitter.

Good Scenarios

A70 - Wintergewitter: I won as the Russians on the last dice roll of the last turn of the game.

A72 - Italian Brothers: Again, a last close combat decided the game. Very close throughout the play.

J27 - High Tide at Heiligenbeil: If you like aircraft, this one is fun. It also played very closely.

T7 - Hill 253.5: If you like it all - vehicles, guns, planes, OBA and obstacles.

All four are considered very balanced.

SP - Commando Kelly from MoH pack, two fights, infantry and a big ass M4 v MKIV fight.

CH - Agony Ateball and Angel from UV, NOBA, Rockets, 768's POA flametanks vs IJA with cave complexes, 330mm mortars and evil terrain

MMP - Urban Guerillas, need i say more?

HoB - Another day on the rack from Fortress Cassino, fantastic german troops well dug in with lots of toys.

VFTT - Cactus Farm, the original, tiny german force holds off a company and 7 churchills, last turn always.

OAF - Fuhrer's Firemen, possibly the bests scenario i have ever played, elite Russians and SS with variable armour support.

Hube's Pocket comes to mind, it's been a favourite since the old SL days.

Last Act in Lorraine is a fun melee as well, just make sure its not the deluxe version. :p

Then again, I'm partial to monster scenarios with combined arms. :D

Thanks for all the suggestions, men; here's the "official" playlist for ASLOK (knowing that I will also be in the Minis, so this is not the whole list):

  • -Blood on Hill 192 [BtB7] 10/3 vs Hennie van der Salm
  • -Scottish Nightmare [Tac40] 10/5 vs Jazz
  • -Those Normandy Nights [CH24]
  • -The RHA At Bay [PBP2]
  • -Last Hope at New Flower [SoN8]
  • -Smoke The Kents [GD-C]
  • -Hube's Pocket [G]
  • -Sicilian Midnight [OA2]
  • -Play Ball [80]
  • -Prelude To Breakout [A78]
  • -Boienked [SP83]
  • -Merely Hanging On [BtB2]
  • -Hitler's Samurai [FF12]
  • -Shoestring Ridge [61]
  • -The Cactus Farm [J50]
  • -The Commissar's House [4]
  • -Urban Guerillas [J1]
  • -Commando Kelly [SP60]
  • -Last Act in Lorraine [AD2]
Purist, I went for the "Deluxe" version because the other has a horrible ROAR balance rating. :cheeky:

Chas,

They'll all change when you get there.. :)

Bet a bunch of new SP scenarios nose in under the tent, and if anything else new is there, more oldies will be bumped off..

Yes, I list more than I can possibly play, just to be safe ;)

Last year I actually played about 2/3rds of the scenarios on my list, so I think I'll get many of these in. It seemed like very few had actually brought a list of their own, so it was easy to get opponents to pick something from mine.

Not only that, but I can vouch for the fact that it's waaaaaaaay easier to play on the Deluxe boards. When you start placing the SMOKE counters from the 13 belching Shermies, plus the 2 automatic smoke FFE's, and then add the 2 blaze counters, topped off by a MILD BREEZE!!!!! You're gonna run out of them.
Counter density is a major problem on the small hex boards.

I too enjoy any of the RB scenarios. Also "Chestnuts, Hot Chestnuts", "Sons of Gallilee", "Scouts Out", and the old SL scenario "The Factory".

I see that as well and it raises the old question of regional playing styles. I have seen more than one case where I have wondered how a scenario on ROARS ends up with it current record. :hmmm: I have played G2 three times and have won twice as the US and lost once as the German. All three games were very close and were won by close cooperation betwixt the US infantry and armour (luuuuuv the gyro stabilizers). I just shake my head at the 8-18 rating and wonder "what are the yanks doing?" :surprise:

A new recommendation for all:

For Whom The Bells Toll (SP102), which I just played at Wild West Fest, is one of the best scenarios I've ever played. Thumbs WAY up; you will not be disappointed.

Play the version on the RB map. Night and day.
I'm in the middle of the BV Commissar's House. Obviously the RB version has the advantage of being able to claim the historical terrain, but beyond that what's the specific appeal? I've actually heard that it's pretty unbalanced.

I played it and lost as the Germans but came close enough to winning that I could smell it.

There are some specific objectives that must be taken quickly and a death star put into upper levels of some buidlings just inside the Russian set up area to bring effective leader-directed fire into the the cellar and level 0 locations of the objective building. If you don't do that, the germans might as well hang it up.

What is there to recommend a scenario beyond playing on the RB map? It has so much more character than a standard geomorphic map it ain't even close to funny.
