Thanks, in advance, for helping a new player.

Are the effect of ELR progressive - should you continually fail morale checks greater than your ELR with a squad does your (for example) your elite squad eventually end up being composed of conscripts, or, is the drop only made one level below the original counter designation.

Just keep ELRing, Just keep ELRing, sorry sorry my kid just
watches too much Nemo.

The effects are cumlative, but remember a broken unit can't ELR.
(often forgotten in the heat of the game). So you have to Break/ELR
then rally, then Break/ELR again. Very possible in large or CG, a lot
less likely in smaller scenerios.

Yes, the effects are progressive...
Theoretically, an elite can go down to a Disrupted conscript!

Note, nevertheless, that the usually short time span of a scenario doesn't allow such regression (especially as broken units don't suffer ELR replacement...).

Example :
A German 468 rolls a MC DR > ELR, and becomes a broken DM 467.
Broken 467 manages to rally (1st time being DM, thus with a "morale" of 3).
It gets a second whiplash and falls down to 447 (DM broken).
447 rallies (same conditions as above).
Third spanking, it becomes a broken DM 436.
436 rallies (praises : a miracle!)
Fourth hit on the nose : becomes a disrupted DM 436...

That takes 3,5 Player turns, MINIMUM (and DM units rarely come back so quick).
Note, nevertheless, that Russians or other mishappen nationalities, don't have 2nd line squads... thus go down the lane quicker...

Most of the time, your squad will have either surrendered, suffered double break (or triple, to disappear completely) or been abandoned by leaders, much more interested in rallying better quality units...
But who said something is impossible in ASL?
All the best for your first experiences in ASL... and with the brittle forces you command !
