While there wasn't an awful lot of detail in the latest newsletter, Frontier did report that they are expanding their team to maintain progress on the expansions as well as the core game. Sounds like the game is doing alright for Frontier or they're putting all their chips in!

Since I had some Christmas money to spend...

I took the plunge and dived in to Elite Dangerous. Have to say that I am having a lot of fun. At the moment it seems like much breadth but little depth. This is not really bothering me since I never want to be anything other than a lone trader and ED already gives me that. It would be nice to some some depth added to the game and I am sure it will come in time.

ED's release reminds me of X-Rebirth's only with fewer bugs. It seems that games with this sort of potential cannot really be crafted complete at release. They tend to be grown over time. X-Rebirth, just over one year on, is becoming a fine game. But I am happy enough with ED to go along for the ride.

Best wishes,
Steve

Those are my thoughts on the game, too. Generally, I like it. Like it enough to know that I won't be returning to Eve any time soon. I pretty much played the part of a lone wolf trader in that game anyway, so Elite gives me the same experience, but with better combat and not having to worry about gate camping griefers.

Zero Punctuation released his review of Elite today, and I think his critique and overall opinion perfectly matches mine:

I particularly agree with the fines for salvage, and the crazy idea that the "black market" would be listed in a space station's contacts list. Isn't that like finding "drug dealers" listed in your phone book? I was hoping these two issues would have been addressed by now.

The Zero Punctuation review was very funny.

I don't really have a problem with the way the black market is presented in the context of a text based menu. I just saw the Contacts menu as a list of your contacts in that particular station, rather than the services provided by the station. I suppose on landing you could be presented with an initial list of 'Station Services', 'Enter Hangar', 'Launch' and 'Stuff You're Old Enough to Know Better', but then it would involve more flicking through menus.

It would be good if you could tag canisters you've picked up as Salvage. These could be sold for a nominal fee and you wouldn't get busted by the cops for carrying illegal goods. I get the impression that the forthcoming Wings update is going to include mechanisms by which friends can share cargo, bounties etc. Hopefully this issue will be sorted out then.

It looks like some people have reached the Elite trading rank, although no winners have been announced as yet. I'm on Novice (Combat), Dealer (Trading) and Scout (Exploration) so nowhere near anything as yet. I've been trying to avoid grinding and just mooch about seeing where missions and cargo take me. I had settled in an area near an Empire world in the middle of Federal space, but came across a canister of 'Motrona Experience Jelly' floating outside a Corolis. I scooped it up, quickly landed and got 13 000 for it on the black market. This was my first experience of the rare goods that I've heard mentioned on the forums. So I trundled over to Dea Motrona to get some more only to find that the commodities market was over a million light seconds from the entry point of the system. It took nearly 20 minutes of real time to get there, so I read the paper en route - proper space trucking! Anyway, I transported 15 tonnes of rares about 200 LY and made 16 000 CR profit per tonne, although it was pretty much illegal in every system I passed through! I think I've discovered another one as there is something called Wuthielo Ku Froth that is illegal in a whole host of systems around where I sold the Jelly. I've managed to get enough cash for the Advanced Discovery Scanner, but can only just afford the insurance. I just need to save up enough for a decent fuel scoop then I'm off into the deep beyond!

Well, slight change of heart. I did a few runs in the Cobra to try and save up some cash and decided the Adder wasn't quite what I wanted after all. So I have been trapsing around the galaxy hauling rare items from place to place and have now racked up enough cash to be able to kit out a Cobra for exploration. Had a nervy moment went I got pulled out of supercruise by a Federal Dropship, but I managed to hold it off for long enough that the police turned up and gave me a helping hand. I did a bit of exploring as I criss-crossed inhabited space and found some cool brown dwarfs with ring systems orbiting a couple of stars. I dropped out of supercruise into one of the ring systems to take a few snaps and found some NPCs mining. Then some pirates turned up and I got to rack up a bounty or two.

I'm on the edge of habitable space and was finally going to start my nebula tour when beta 1.1 turned up! It's taking an age to download so I probably won't be able to take a look until tomorrow now...

So... it seems that most of the time you can trade, bounty hunt, or pirate in this game. What else is there to do for players? Can you set up your own company using NPCs as the employees? Ooor...??

For the moment, at least, if you want to build stations and run fleets you would need X-Rebirth or one of the X-Series to do that. Not sure what Elite Dangerous will ultimately bring.

The other main career is exploring, but it's all pretty much one man band stuff. The possibility to hire NPCs as allies (i.e. as escorts) was in the DFF, but its not in yet. This probably won't happen until persistent NPCs are implemented and I have no idea when that will be!

The next up date to Elite is probably going to land sometime this week. This will include the usual tweaks and fixes, but will finally add the ability to team up with your friends in a more formal way. You'll be able to form 'wings' of up to four ships which will enable you to track each other in supercruise, share bounties and cargo as well as slave each other's drives. Also NPCs will form wings and this should give more challenging opposition for people playing as a group as well as make trips to Anarchy's more lively for those playing solo.

Frontier are planning on releasing Elite for the Xbox1 later this year, with a PS4 port due later. I guess No Man's Sky is the PS4 exclusive, so perhaps it's a better fit on Microsoft's box. Mac beta is due at the end of this month. Here's the trailer...

I took my Cobra out to Rigel and took a close look at Witch Head Nebula. When I got back to inhabited space it turned out I got first finder for a couple of planets, so HIP something, something, something 10 you are forever mine! On my return I decided to have a go trading rare goods. These are available in small quantities in certain starports and can be traded for a large profit if you travel over 150 LYs from where you bought them. Mostly these are scattered around human occupied space, but there are some clusters where you can find a number of them within a short distance from each other. By nipping between a few systems you can fill your hold with a load of these goods and make a tidy sum at the other end. Naturally where there's money, there's pirates and I've run into a few of these in and around Lave. The Imperial Clipper seems a popular choice as I guess it's pretty fast, I got pulled over by one and couldn't outrun it in my Asp, so I had to relent and gave over 10 tonnes of rares. Since then I've managed to avoid being interdicted and have saved up enough to get a class A frameshift drive (5 million CR for an Asp!!!). I'm going to make one more run in the general direction of the new starport that has been built at New Yembo and then go off exploring as the deep is calling me again...

One of the things that Frontier added in Elite 1.2 was the ability to use the debug camera. Although it's pretty clunky it does allow you (finally) to take some snaps of your ship. So here's a couple of my Asp around some alien worlds around 1,500 to 2,000 LY from Sol (only another 23,000 to the centre of our galaxy!).

Bathed in the eeirie blue glow of HD 235197. - This was an odd system with a series of brown dwarfs, as well as a class K and two class M stars orbiting the blue giant HD 235197 1.

And another image, this time in Supercruise as I've passed the Pelican and North American Nebula.

It's going to take an age to get to the galactic centre, I just hope I don't bump into any Thargoids...

Nice shots!

I haven't played Elite in a while - I haven't played anything other than Scourge of War in a while - but would like to jump in soon at take a look at the changes. I am most eager for them to revamp the mission mechanics. The USS three card monte approach leaves much to be desired.

Hopefully we'll get some info on update 1.3 is going to consist of sometime this week, although they seem to talking about the Mac beta at the moment. The title of the update is 'PowerPlay' and there's some hope on the forums that this will be the mission revamp. The USS have changed slightly in the sense that you can get strong and weak signal sources, the former having a bit more danger. The go look for black boxes, stolen artwork missions aren't desperately exciting, I think I might have done one or two. Having said that Frontier accidentally released a snippet on Galnet on a forthcoming competition. Apparently there are going to be five canisters containing some secret prototype. If you find one and get it back to a particular station then you win a 'Nvidia Titan GFX Black', this might be another mistake as I think the new Nvidia card is the Titan X? Still might be worth popping into a few USS - unfortunately I'm 2,000 LY away from inhabited space, plus I'd be gutted to find one out in the deep as I sold all my cargo racks!!

Scott,

Not sure about F2P speculation. However, the rest of the your post seems accurate to me.

There was a reason the Space-Sim genre all but disappeared. It was and still remains a niche market. FD already have all the hard-core players and they find it is not enough. They need the casual players as well - albeit at a discount after Valve takes its cut.

Ambitious products for niche markets .... Ooooo does not bode well for Star Citizen..... Luckily, I do not have a dog in that race.....

Best wishes,

IIRC Frontier's line was that they had no immediate plans to put it in Steam. They also mentioned in a financial report that preorders were in line with their 'bull' expectations. I assume this is the financial meaning of the word bull, rather than the excremental ;) however, the game doesn't look like it's going to be a sleeper hit in the short term. It's perhaps a bit tough for the casual gamer and not enough mmo for the social gamer (yet) so I guess the move to Steam may pick up some new customers. I don't think the timing of the Titan Black competition and the game coming to Steam in time for the Easter holidays are a coincidence. I guess they've been planning it for a while, although you never know...

Michael Brooke's mentioned that 1.3 will be the biggest update yet and will include a new way to interact with the Galaxy. I wonder what that might be, crafting and a player economy? Guilds?

I guess the move to f2p will entirely depend on how much people spend on skins and decals. I doubt it will be for a while, we'll get some idea of the direction the price is going when the Mac version comes out. Incidentally I managed to get the game to run on low settings on my crapbook with onboard graphics, which ain't too bad.
