Hi all,
How does one place the Escarpment E1 overlay on board 25 in VASL?
I scanned the forum, and saw that the question was asked in... 2003, and no one answered it.:crosseye:

Found out by myself :
One has to declare hex1 and hex2 as A1 and A2 respectively...

Thanks for posting this. I asked the question too probably about a year ago in a thread where it probably didn't belong, then figured it out for myself and was too lazy to answer my own posting for the edification of others.

Now if we can just get more folks to play escarpment scenarios the world will be a better place.

OK, besides "Escape from Derna" and "Contest in the Clouds," what other escarpment scenarios are there? (The ASL Scenario Archive has a field for overlays, but doesn't let you search by that field. :( )

I don't know of other scenarios.
I was setting up for Contest in the Clouds, as I recently discovered that Climbing rules are not that complicated - I used them the first time in Cherry Ripe.

A little hyperbole on my part; just a little more desert in general would make me happy. Been too long since I've played one myself. Board 25 in general is a tough sell for some, let alone the escarpment.

There aren't many escarpment scenarios. In addition to those listed here, there is one in the Desert Rats pack. I was thinking there was one in the linked CG from J5(?), but I now recall that it was just a 'naked' Bd 25 in that one. (And a fun scenario to boot).

the DR3 scen Halfaya Pass is a good play so far, we're into it via PBEM.

See the notes I'd made in Point Blank! on this,
the E1 must place Bd 25 as A1 / A2 coordinates to be correct.
The boards must be v4 boards only.
the VASL systems being used via PBEM logfiles must be identical or the overlay "disappears" ie 5.9.1 or 5.9.2 for both users not one using each version.

There is one more scen out there, older with the Escarpment.

regards ,Jon H

I use v5 boards, and it works fine.
Now, both players must use the same set of boards.

I do not think that there are any v5 Desert boards available yet

Ok. I thought all my boards were v5 (I presume that v5 would match the map bundle maps colors ?).

Now, if desert v5 boards don't exist yet, why specifiy that "The boards must be v4 boards only." ?

The "other" early scen I was thinking of using the Excarpment G23 Habbaniya Heights, never played it though. so that's 4 so far I know of :)

regard,s Jon.

PS the reason if if , like me , you took a forced hiatus from ASL and VASL around the 3.3 version time frame, ( mid 2001) then you would, as I did, have still floating around the .gifs of the old v3 desert boards, which will not work with logfiles and the desert overlays ( all of them).

PS WayBack Machine WILL acept the VASL.org website it toto as an input for search, and the links are saved and active in the archiver for the VASL v4 and previous maps and overlays, including all of the desert stuff.

Point of No Return. A great whirling dervish desert number with Rommel hisself making an appearance as a 10-3 (and I lost him as the German by rolling consecutive boxcars). Also probably the archetypal situation where you could use unarmed trucks to mask the other side's fire with vehicular dust. Good sport, what?

Escarpment "complete" scen list form ASL Archives:

ASL 38 Escape from Derna
G23 Habbaniya Heights
DR2 Hellfire Pass
ASL 42 Point of No Return
DR4 Seizing Sidi Rezegh
A23 Contest in the Clouds

Thesea re all the Scenario Archive lists , however, Contest in the Clouds does NOT show the E1 overlay in the archive, how interesting

How were you able to locate all of these? The Archive's "advanced search" page doesn't include a field for overlays. :hmmm:

you simply search for Bd 25, then open each page individually and look under overlays for the E1 logo

Yes I did that

KRL, Jon

Surprised no one else thought of it , actually

Well, I did briefly think about it, but I wasn't crazy enough to actually do it! :hail:

I think that one can now search the archive by overlay, due to kindness of the site maintainer.

On a substantive note, what is the terrain on the backside of the escarpment? It seems to be mottled like hillock terrain, and it is also difficult to make out the level transitions.... I accidentally played it as sand in my first stab at scenario DR 3 (Hellfire Pass).

It is just "merging" artwork to transition between the hill-colour terrain of the escarpment to the level-0 terrain behind it. Best pictured perhaps by placing two desert boards on either side of Bd25+E1 -- it's level-0, then the ground changes height abruptly, then continues at (new) level-0.
