Mark Pitcavage has pictures of the original GHQ ASL packs on his Desperation Morale website at:

Whilst pontificating on another thread I mentioned GHQ Micro Armour. In the original rulebook there was an ad in Chapter J for GHQ Micro Armour for DASL. Each Micro Armour pack was supposed to include miniatures and a scenario. I don't recall if they were ever produced, I know I never saw one of the scenarios. The only GHQ miniatures I ever saw were the ones presented to Fish for winning a DASL tournament They were handpainted by GHQ and were presented to Fish by the president of GHQ,if I remember correctly. Fish gave me two Tigers and a truck. I don'tknow what became of the rest. I didn't see them in his gaming stuff when I was helping his brother.

Did anyone ever play with them? They seemed very fragile, especially the gun barrels. If anyone has any of the miniatures or the scenarios I'd love to hear from you. Thanks.

I love the combination of model building and ASL that one gets when taking the plunge into using historically painted 6mm / 1/285th scale micro-armor and ASL.

here are some of the challenges I've run into over the two decades of combining my love of miniatures with ASL:

1). Playing with the microarmor on the flat Deluxe boards leaves one wondering why not just use cardboard counters. To make the minis really come alive in a game one needs 3D terrain. I've experimented with everything from cloth game mats to 3" hex-based terrain and while it looks great, there is the time/ expense of creating the terrain and the additional set up time for playing a scenario.

2). Lack of DASL scenarios with a "reasonable" map scale. By this I mean scenarios with less than two Deluxe boards because after translating that into 3D terrain scale at a 3 or 4 inch hex size the playing table gets rather large - and setup time increases as well.

3). Lack of DASL scenarios outside of the Normandy bocage (ie Busting the Bocage) that use a non-city setting. I prefer playing miniature games that don't require a lot of multi- story buildings simply for the visual effect. Most 6mm buildings don't allow units to be placed inside them, much less on different levels since one then has to use some sort of of "level" counters and "inside" markers which clutter up a miniatures game. I would love to see Eastern European / Russian settings along the lines of the Russians trying to crack the Mannerheim line or the a Russin forward detachment overpowering and holding a critical hilltop or bridge. These are both examples of close- in fights that DASL can excel at given it's compressed geographic scale.

Now that I've retired from the US Army, I am getting back into both painting the large backlog of microarmor I've accumulated and playing ASL and other 6mm scale WW2 games. If anyone is working on DASL scenarios or wants to compare notes on terrain, rules conversion, or anything else please contact me.

Kevin,

Your pricing is a bit off - a 5 pack of armor is usually $9.95 so about $2 each, or less if you are patient and buy during their annual Christmas sale with 10-15% off. I have collected and painted some 2,000 pieces since AH and GHQ teamed up with the "expanded" DASL idea.
When I purchased my items, it was late 1989, and they were 4.95 for a pack from the GHQ phamphlet I had. The Battle Packs were $19.95 (about 20-23 different vehicles in each one).

Give me a couple days and I'll post some pics of both games in progress and painted minis. I'm writing an article for the next issue of Banzaii also on using miniatures with ASL.

Yes I remember those days - when I had much less cash! What I find amazing is the extreme range of vehicles now available - and the sheer detail at this scale. To their credit GHQ is also going back an updating some of their earlier castings. In fact, one of my biggest disappointments in the initial AH/GHQ release was the "squads in formation" minis. The individual infantrymen and support weapons packs available now, although more work to base, look much more realistic on the gaming table. While still a bit pricy for a newbie starting into the DELUXE / ASL with minis venue, if you narrow down to exactly what you need for any given scenario / group of scenarios (thinking of Busting the Bocage) it's probably not much more than $100 to get a decent base of figures started.

I had a ton of them, and even designed scenarios for them. We often played using them. I was sorry it never took off because I was a big fan...looks like just about the only one.

Played using then once in a bar on 3D xtra large boards. The patrons were fascinated with the little, silver tanks.

Long gone.
Glenbo,

If you have any of your in-house scenarios still lying around ID like to take a look at them. They won't go anywhere else without your permission.

Not sure what scenarios you're looking for, but use the Chronology of War 2013 posted in the forum recently and you'll get a complete list of DASL scenarios - including playtest but unpublished stuff. If you can't find any of the scenarios drop me a line.

There's a player by the name of Bill Shade who lives in Kingman, Arizona who has been a fairly regular attendee at ConsimWorld Expo in Tempe. Last met him several years ago. He had more GHQ micro armor than I have ever seen in one place before. Don't believe he follows the GSASL forums, but if anyone wants it I could dig out his contact info...it's buried in a stack of old ASL stuff in one of my desk drawers.
