I enjoy both.

I used to play ASL face to face a lot, not its on occasion and via VASL.

I constantly play SP MBT and SP WW2 against the AI and on occasion PBEM. Both games have PBEM Campaign Games and I got to get in one last year it's pretty awesome!

I play against lots of AI but the human element is far more interesting.

None of the options really equate to the VASL
Experience.
I would still consider VASL a type of multiplayer gaming with a live opponent.

Honestly, face-to-face tabletop gaming, online multiplayer, PBEM, and gaming against an AI -- they all have their place and I've enjoyed all of them at one time or another.

Sure, face-to-face tabletop gaming is cool, but it's not the final word on gaming by a long shot. For instance, the giganic online battles seen in EVE Online, which involve 10,000 pilots or more, would not be possible in any other format.

I was amazed to find that that AI in the PC version of Lock'n'Load Stalingrad could actually teach me to play the game better against a human opponent. Both have their advantages.
