Played scenario 111 Balkan Sideshow recently where cavalry swim across a river. Dice were against the Hungarians in this one and 3 of my 8 cavalrymen rolled boxcars while crossing the river and drowned. Did I play this right? The rules say that apart from the improved portage capacity of Cavalry, the rules are the same as infantry - and infantry can drown.

Phew, this is an extremely rare situation... I have no idea and am listenting in with interest.

3x Boxcars? Maybe you pulled the plug and drained the river? ;)

I think we can all agree that the humans drown. THE HORSES ARE FINE.
That's how I read the rules. "Cavalry" as per A13.1 only refers to the "Personnel unit Riding a horse", not to the Horse Counter. So they are fine.

Unfortunately it was the riders I needed across the river. Once they drowned I don't know where the horses went. The ones that did make it across the river dismounted as soon as they were on dry land anyway.
