No wonder the German sailors didn't want to go out to meet the Grand Fleet again. Yes the British lost three battlecruisers but the damage to the HSF seems more widespread across the fleet.

Re: Jutland - the pictoral countdown

I don't think they should even have sent battlecruisers to such a large fleet action - asking for trouble! They're surely supposed to be used for taking out smaller vessels at long range rather than slugging it out with ships of similar armament, let alone battleships.
Same thing with HMS Hood

Do you mean HSF or GF?

I think the GF made the best possible use of their BCs. And the german implementation of the design concept 'BC' proved very performant if you consider all the heavy beating during most of the battle. They did exactly what they were designed for: scout, lurk, allure, and ride as the cavalry for stop gap measures.

And its more impressive to present the heroic Seydlitz than an undamaged Kronprinz Willhelm.

I meant the GF. Weren't the RN BCs a bit more lightly armoured, but consequently a little quicker? Hence more likely to find themselves in a sticky situation when confronted by ships with equal firepower.

Yes, the British BC's were more lightly armored than their German counterparts. They also used poor(dangerous) powder and ammo handling practices in their turrets. Additionally, they also had Sir David Beatty as commander of the BC's, who made many mistakes during the "Run to the South". By failing to keep the 5th battle fleet dreadnoughts with the BC fleet, he not only missed his chance to destroy the German BC fleet. He also lost two of his BC's, nearly lost his flagship, and almost fell into the trap that Hipper and Scheer were laying for him.

Probably his worst offense, though, was his failure to effectively communicate what was going on to Jellicoe.

Re: Jutland - the pictoral countdown

As I understood it, the Admiralty still believed in Admiral Lord Fishers theories about battlecruisers to some extent, and as the Battle of the Dogger Bank had ended in a British success, the near-lethal damage to HMS Lion did not cause some high-ups to stop and think for a moment. Perhaps it was the ill effect of some people starting to believe in their own propaganda, and as the British BC had triumphed in an engagement against their opposite numbers once, nothing seemed to speak against them doing it again...

Re: Jutland - the pictoral countdown

I guess they spent all their good luck in the first engagement, only for the balance to be redressed in the second...

These are amazing pictures! What is their source/copyright status? Are they all public domain at this point?
