On 22nd June 1941 Adolf Hitler ordered his army to attack the Soviet Union in an action that he said would make the world hold its breath. From a front running from the Baltic Sea to the Black Sea 3 million axis soldiers embarked on Operation Barbarossa. Three Army Groups struck eastwards. Army Group South, with the bulk of the satellite armies, struck towards Odessa and the Dniper River, slicing across the Ukraine. Army Group Centre struck into the heart of the Belorussia, while von Leeb’s smaller Army Group North had Leningrad as an operational objective. Here is the story of Army Group North and its Finnish allies.

Turns 1-5

Units of Army Group North struck across the Soviet border as ordered and quickly pushed aside any border defences and units stationed there. Soon enough they were streaming into Lithuania.

Kaunas has fallen and German units begin to stream eastwards. Lithuanians hail German troops as liberators.

Further to the North Riga has fallen with the SS Totenkopf gaining its first laurels in the campaign in the East. The Dvina line is now truly breached. Many Baltic citizens see the Germans as liberators.

The initial advance was quick but stalled a little around the first major river encountered by Army Group North. Nevertheless the two main crossings at the Dvina were seized in relatively bloodless battles for the Whermacht. The Red Air Force is gradually being blown out of the sky by the Luftwaffe and air superiority is ours. Units of Army Group North are now poised to break out of their Dvina bridgeheads and strike towards Pskov and Leningrad. In Karelia things move slower due to the terrain but Salla has been captured and the first defence ring near Murmansk has come under preliminary bombardment.

After the breaching of the Dvina river, the units of AGN breakout of their bridgeheads mopping up resistance on their way!!! A few scattered Soviet units lie in wait but soon the road to Pskov and subsequently Leningrad will soon be blown open. The Luftwaffe continues to rain death from the skies as the Tallinn air group is destroyed in its entirety.

Finnish troops advance on some fronts. Meanwhile AGN takes a rest as the troops need resupplying after a successful series of initial assaults.

A quick assault puts Axis forces on the gates of Alakurtti. SS Nord waits to exploit any breakthrough.

Progress on some fronts has been slow due to heavily fortified troops and mopping up operations. AGN is now in Estonia chasing Tallinn the approaches to Leningrad. Small gains have been made in Karelia but the Soviet line holds strong.

Pskov is under siege and one Soviet infantry unit manages to hold on to the smouldering and burning ruins of the city

The Soviet units in the North are holding a serious of assaults though some progress has been made on the Murmansk Front. The units at Alakurrti have heroically defended against a series of protracted assault and have blocked the road East, the terrain prevents any outflanking movements. Kholm has fallen and Pskov is under heavy assault. The outskirts of Dno where reached and an audacious coup by recon elements of 3rd and 36th Motorized Divisions failed to take the city.

The fall of Kholm captured by the 8th Pz Rgt of the 8th Pz Division and the 29th Inf Rgt of the 3rd Motorized Division.

There has been very slow progress these turns and this is largely due to a spirited Soviet defence. Finnish troops have bogged down but the fight has now been taken to the streets of Viipuri. In Northern Karelia there is a stalemate while in Estonia the spires of Tallinn can be seen in the murky distance. Engineer units are carrying out an extensive bridge repairing and rail conversion programme behind the frontline. Though not ideal AGN is in a good position to spring forward.

Pskov finally falls. The defenders fought well and as a mark of respect POWs were treated according to the Geneva Convention against the OKH standing orders. The 21st Infantry Division had the honour of capturing the city.

The dead heroic defenders of Pskov have all been awarded medals posthumously, however the loss was a mighty blow to the Russians everywhere and the local commander was taken out and shot.
The scorched earth policy of retreating Russian troops will keep the enemies engineers busy for quite some time:)
Extra rations of Vodka has been dispensed to the gallant defenders of Alakurrti who have withstood multiple attacks!

The fall of Pskov was followed by the fall of Dno. The units in the central front have began to push back a steady flow of Russian units desperate to clog the road to Leningrad. Behind the lines the supply network is slowly being rebuilt because of the enemies effective scorched earth policy. In the far North there is a stalemate with conditions resembling World War I trenches. Though the JR10 of the 14th Divisionaa has reached one of its objectives but is in need of resupply.

The Viipuri Front. Veterans of World War I comment on the similarity in combat between 1914 and 1941. Finnish troops cannot help but admire the tenacity of the Soviet defenders. Stalin must rule with an iron fist of fear.

A surprise Soviet counterattack throws some units back on the Murmansk Front temporarily capturing and looting the city of Petsamo. A furious Fuehrer orders the commanding general of the sector demoted and posted to the 999 Penal Battalion. He later falls as a lowly Gefrieter outside Moscow.

Three stabilised fronts have formed around Viirpuri, Alakurrti and from Gdov to Staraya Russa, Little or no movement is reported. The supply problem is getting better thanks to the incessant work of engineer and rail repair units. But in some case some divisions are low on supply. The outlook looks good with reinforcements arriving. The battle is poised but the rumblings from OKH are not good. Field Marshal von Leeb is concerned.

The 14th Divisionaa has concluded its campaign in glory achieving its objective. The commanding general has been transferred to the Viirpuri Front in order to try and achieve a breakthrough.

Fall Typhoon is beginning to have its effect on AGN as some of its mobile units are transferred to the Central Front. Very little movement has been reported in the last 5 turns with infantry divisions whittiling away at the line south of Novogorod and fighting heavily for every advance. Tallinn is one step closer but Virrpuri stillholds out. In the far north of Karelia the first snows have fallen. My only consoloation is that his troops are also freezing their assess off.

The advance runs a serious risk of bogging down but von Mnastien has proposed a plan to OKH that could break the stalemate south of Novogorod. Narva lies tantalizingly close but i fear that Triaxe has mined the road to it very heavily with his units..if he blows up one more bridge i shall order the SS to execute all POWS from now until the fall of Leningrad!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stalemate across the northern sector of the Eastern Front. An early frost has literally frozen AGN in its tracks and back in Rastenburg Hitler is fuming. Operation Typhoon is in its latter stages of planning and the high command requires the northern front to start shifting forward. A wire suddenly brings good news from von Manstein it reads “… the reichskriegsflagge flies over Tallinn Heil Hitler”

The first frosts bring success on the left flank of AGN. The 217th Infantry Division storms Tallinn and forcefully ejects all Soviet units from the city. A pocket is formed awaiting destruction.
