Hi,

A situation that came up during a game this weekend.

A squad is in a building and across the street is a rubble
hex it wants to Dash to. And since Deep Snow is in effect
this move costs 4.5 MF (1.5 for the road hex and another 3
for the rubble).

So in order to make this Dash it would have to Double Time
since it needs 4.5 MF to make this Dash.

So now to the question:
Does it have to declare the Double Time before it starts the Dash ?,
or can it wait to declare Double Time after it has moved into the
Street (to gaing just one extra MF) ?

Good question!
Logically, as it knows where it will be going and how much it will cost it, it ought to declare Double-Time from the beginning.
But rules say that a unit can declare 2ble-time during movement...
Further, Dash is "nearly" a 2-hex one-move sort of thing.
The only difference between declaring DT before or during Dash is if the unit is pinned on the road (if it breaks, it loses CX status)...
I'd anyhow propose to declare DT from the beginning here - though I am sure somebody will tell me that rules allow doing otherwise.
I can hardly imagine a squad, dashing through the road suddenly cry : "So, there was snow on that road, let us use more strength !"
But I also am conscious that "realism" arguments are limited, as ASL remains (happily)... a game!

I would say that you must declare Double Time before you declare the Dash. The last sentence of A4.63 says that once Dash is declared, no other movement options are available to the Dashing unit.

I agree with Bruce... If you're going to dash, you must declare which hex you are dashing into.... you can't move into the street and THEN declare a dash...

IMO, YMMV
