The periods Jan-Mar of 2011 and Jan-Mar 2014 invite comparison. In 2011, the CM community was awaiting the release of a new highly anticipated game, namely the return of the game engine to the Second World War after many long years. A public AAR had just been posted by battlefront. In Jan 2014, the CM community finds itself in the same position. CM is scheduled to return to the Eastern Front after many long years. A public AAR had just been concluded.

A comparison of the state of the community on gamesquad shows some interesting contrasts.

I observe a general trend that tactical wargaming digs itself deeper and deeper into its own hole.

Community websites that either close or have some other problem are a big part of that.

Don wanted to fork off the old WarfareHQ into its own website again but honestly, not much point, not much left.

The Eastern Front CMx2 game will launch with many of the same problems that plagued CMx2 forever. The only high class problem bumped off since 2011 is the MGs. That is very disappointing. And apart from fixes, we still don't have feature parity with 2002's CMBB, which is now 12 years old.

Does all this hard work by Dorosh, straining his mathematical abilities, have anything to do with the 9,699 views his 'Merry Christmas and Announcement' post (which not a single person participated in) got?

Real life issues and a general waning for war gaming have precluded me from visiting and taking part in any gaming sites for a while now.

i think it's slowly dying and BF will slowly die with it.

CM just isn't popular enough to drive forward this niche. It's mainly a bunch of old guys playing a game designed by a bunch of old guys now.

oh and no surprise, Dorosh still hates BF after all these years..........

anywat, at, nice to see a few of you are still going strong.

The best I can offer is hope to get fired and make an open source game. Didn't happen so far.

I wasn't going to say anything, but since you put it all into focus so well for us - unenthusiastic, biased moderators, and baseless posts like this in which the most useful contributors were attacked without foundation, are what drove away the best part of this forum. Some of them are named above.

It's mainly a bunch of old guys playing a game designed by a bunch of old guys now.
It's really sad that you basically trashed this forum through your inability to moderate it, then just dismiss those who participated as not being worthy of being here anyway. Because they were - in your phrase - just "a bunch of old guys."

CM just isn't popular enough
I think the community would disagree with you...

anywat, at, nice to see a few of you are still going strong.
And you missed the entire point. Because of your 'moderation' the forum was taken over - like you were warned it would be - by one abusive poster who now uses it as his private bulletin board. That isn't "going strong" by any definition. But after Don, the site owner, announced that he runs the site at a financial loss, I'm not sure that anyone expected anything to change. You do get what you pay for.

Real life issues and a general waning for war gaming have precluded me from visiting and taking part in any gaming sites for a while now.
Just what you want in a moderator. So why wouldn't you do the right thing and hand the reins over to someone with the time and ability to administer the board properly?

How are the Lulu sales going Dorosh? Would you be so kind as to share those statistics with the "community"?

If the information were retrievable, it would be interesting to have Dorosh sit around for hours and tabulate the number of guests and members online vs. most time periods for this website's Combat Mission page. Dorosh seems to focus on posters in his 'analysis'. But the fact is that this page gets about two to three dozen guests and very few 'members' as a historical fact. The number of occasions where the number of guests jumped up to the 80-100 range was during the entertaining Dorosh melt-downs. Myself and others spread the word through emails to come check out the GS-Dorosh spectacles.

The traffic at BF has followed a similar trend with periods of little to no traffic. It is quite dead waiting for the EF release IMO.

Of course, antics like this statistical analysis are the reason that Dorosh is mocked in the wargaming world. Posts like the one above to Geordie are the reson that people think so little of him as a person. Little is as Little does...

He was referring to the wargame community at large. Not this forum in particular.

You are correct.

I can't help but find it interesting that in the face of the reality that Lewis was allowed to ruin this particular forum, the initial response is about the health of the wargaming industry in general.

Don't you play with old men and dice? How is their health anyway? The old men, that is?

Edit: After rereading dale's post, it struck me that he is starting to sound like an old man himself. Hopefully, he sees some kids playing on his lawn and chases them away. Be good for his circulation and such.

There are now...Views: 10,523...at Dorosh's Merry Christmas thread. I swear it isn't me. Supposedly, all the wargamers are doing it. Can POS lose his title?

That was the point of his research and his post? Seriously? I assumed it was about "The Death of Battlefront" or somefink like that

He went through all that to say "NUTTERNAME pissed in my sandbox"?

One is a symptom of the other. The forums aren't actively "run" anymore, so some personalities get too much weight by default.

(I guess I have to post to hold up my 10%.)

I generally post on questions of wargaming in general as I don't play CM. I also don't play WoT but I post on a couple of the blogs because that is where wargamers are these days and questions on WWII in general come up.

Any ways why doesn't someone break down the BF CM2 forums by users and see how many of the same posters are doing the posting and compare it to something?

I believe Dorosh did this in the past. But it turned out that his investigations just uncovered that the declining number of posts were actually due to his being banned and all his sock puppets and aliases getting snuffed....

How can you be 10%? I mean, you are constantly here...but 10%??

MD's done it before. He might do it again.
