The World War II code talkers are perhaps more well known, but the first American code talkers were Choctaw in World War I (also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Choctaw_code_talkers).

Wouldn't it be better to utilize some of the languages of the indigenous populations? I would imagine they would be far more secure.

You've never been up Richibucto way, I can tell. In terms of intelligibility, think deep creole, but faster and about 2/3 something that is, despite claims to the contrary, in no way at all French.
