Game Turn 1

The scale of this particular scenario is 4 km per hexagon, weekly turns, and units ranging in size from companies to battalions:

The human player plays the US, RVNAF and Free World forces against a computer-controlled NVA and VC opponent. The particularity of my scenarios series is the mission concept: every turn, the human player will have to conduct specific operations in order to gain additional Victory Points.

GAME TURN 1:

At the scenario start of GT1 (8 March 1965), the situation is rather grim for the Allied player, the VC holding much of the countryside and with most RVNAF units bunkered up in static defense:

The only mobile RVNAF units are the Rangers, armored cavalry squadrons and Strategic Reserve (Airborne and VNMC) units. I decide to leave them where they are for now, keeping them fresh for future operations.

US units in country are few, mostly aviation companies:

There are two mission on GT1, the first is the arrival of the first two USMC battalions at Da Nang: 3/9 lands across RED Beach while 1/3 is airlifted directly to Da Nang airbase from Okinawa:

I regroup them all at the Da Nang airbase, knowing that they will become garrisoned next turn for at least a month, unable to move beyond the perimeter.

The other mission is a battalion-size RVNAF operation on a suspected POW camp location near An Ninh east of An Khe, no enemy units are encountered:

This concludes the Allied turn. The programed opponent's (PO) turn is also short, the E210 Local Force battalion launches an all-out assault on the Kannack CIDG camp in Binh Dinh Province, but is repulsed with heavy losses, thanks to USAF air support:

Game Turn 2

News briefing at the start of GT2:

The only new Allied unit arriving in theater this turn is the ROK 'Peace Dove' engineer task force, a non-combat unit that will serve for construction purposes, flying from Seoul to Bien Hoa airbase:

At Da Nang, the 9th Marines Expeditionary Brigade has become garrisoned to reflect early White House ROEs restricting it to the perimeter of the airbase with interdiction to engage in combat operations. To the south lies the heavily populated Quang Nam Province, almost entirely in the hands of the VC:

In Binh Dinh Province, the 7th ARVN Airborne Battalion is flown into Kannack to reinforce the defense but the VC force that attacked the camp has vanished. The 3rd Airborne Battalion returns to An Khe on foot from Operation QUYET THANG 127:

There is no missions this turn and the PO remains well hidden. The beginning of the US intervention in Vietnam was a bit of an anti-climax, the VC chose not to engage in any major operations, and the war fell into some sort of lull that would last two months until early May.

Game Turn 3

News briefing for GT3:

GT3 sees very little action as well. The allied player receive the 716th MP Battalion at Tan Son Nhut that will boost the defense of downtown Saigon:

I move several helicopter companies deep in the Mekong Delta in preparation for a large ARVN search and destroy operation that will begin next turn in the U Minh Forest:

The 7th ARVN Battalion is recalled from Kannack to Pleiku while the Marines at Da Nang are still patrolling the airbase perimeter, shooting the occasional monkeys that try to infiltrate the wire.

Game Turn 4

News briefing for GT4:

Not much in the way of reinforcements this turn, the top bras in Washington are still deciding what to commit and where. Only new unit is an additional Skyraider squadron for the VNAF.

The RVNAF have 3 operations planned this turn, including a multi-battalion one in the Delta. The first is QUYET THANG 512, a road clearing operation from Tam Ky to Tien Phuoc by the 5th Abn Bn. No enemy units are encountered along the axis of advance:

The second one is another road clearing operation, conducted by the VNMC Task Force BRAVO between Bong Son and Tam Quan in Binh Dinh Province. The 1st and 3rd Battalions bump into an unknown size enemy force in the village of An Thai and decide for a frontal assault, a poor choice as the enemy unit is revealed to be the 5th Bn, 12th PAVN Regiment which inflicts heavy losses to the Vietnamese Marines:

Finally, Operation DAN CHI 129 is launched in the Mekong Delta near the northern fringe of the U Minh Forest under control the 21st ARVN Division. 5 infantry and 2 Ranger battalions are engaged and manage to trap the U Minh 10 VC LF Bn dug in a mangrove swamp:

The assault is poorly coordinated and friendly forces fail to dislodge the VC:

GT4 ends on an uneventful PO phase.

Game Turn 5

News briefing for GT5:

Quite a few new units this turn, including a Marine battalion and Phantom squadron, four CIDG units and the USS ORISKANY and his air wing (which brings the number of US CVs to 4 at Dixie Station, waiting the authorization to fly combat missions over RVN):

The first mission this turn is to airlift two companies from the newly arrived 2/3 Marines to Phu Bai where a second USMC enclave will be established:

The other four missions this turn consist in building four new CIDG camps (two in II CTZ and two in IV CTZ) at Tan Linh, Suoi Da, Cai Cai and Tuyen Nhon. All sites are secured and construction begins without enemy interference.

In the two major contact initiated last turn, the U Minh 10 Battalion has escaped the ARVN's Operation DAN CHI 129 and vanished, the South Vietnamese troops finding only abandoned bunkers and trenches. In QUYET THANG 131, the 2nd VNMC Battalion in reserve at Bong Son reinforced its two embattled sister units and finally cleared the village of An Thai, forcing the NVA to flee toward the mountains:

Finally, the Marines at Da Nang got the green light from the White House to go out and engage the enemy. The first move consist in occupying the high ground east of the airfield:

Game Turn 7

News briefing for GT7. The isolated A Ro CIDG in extreme western Quang Nam Province has been closed and the Special Landing Force has been temporarily disbanded:

Reinforcements this turn include Det A-224 which opens a new CIDG camp at Phu Tuc in Phu Bon Province with the help of the A-503 MIKE Force flown in from Nha Trang to secure the area. A 5th CV arrives also, the USS BONHOMME RICHARD. Authorization to fly combat missions from DIXIE STATION has been granted on GT6 by CINCPAC:

No missions on GT7 apart from securing Phu Tuc but I move the headquarters of the VNMC Task Force BRAVO and 5th VNMC Bn to Vung Tau via the Rung Sat Special Zone to prepare for an amphibious operation next turn in the Delta:

In the Da Nang TAOR, Company A, 3d Recon Bn is inserted in the hills west of airbase and detects an enemy base camp in a narrow valley northwest of Hoi Vuc, directing air strikes on the location with good effect:

The PO is still lying low, preparing its forces for his planned monsoon offensive...
