A unit with wall advantage gets ambush in the CCPh and decides to withdraw. Does the act of withdrawing constitute forfeiting wall advantage and the remaining enemy unit can claim it or can he retain wall advantage as he moves to the other side?

Thanks

Mike

Neither side can have WA when an enemy is in the same Location. I am pretty sure the unit remaining in the Location gets to claim WA before the withdrawing unit but I haven't looked at the rules to make sure. -- jim

As Jim has noted, WA was lost as soon as an enemy unit entered the hex. Neither unit has WA after the withdrawal but the ATTACKER can claim it in the next RPh.

9.322 A unit claiming WA must always be marked with a "Wall Advan" counter. Placing a "Wall Advan" counter and claiming WA are synonymous, as are removing a "Wall Advan" counter and forfeiting WA [EXC: 9.323]. A Pinned, TI, or Immobile unit cannot voluntarily claim or forfeit WA. Claiming WA is voluntary [EXC: 9.323], and can be done by a unit at five times: during its setup; at the end of any RPh (step 1.32B of ASOP, ATTACKER first); during its MPh/APh (either as part of, or before/after MF/MP expenditures); when losing HIP status; whenever all enemy units lose/forfeit WA over shared wall/hedge hexsides. WA must be forfeited immediately if a unit no longer fulfills 9.32 and may be forfeited at any other time. Claiming/forfeiting WA is not considered an action for RPh limits (A3.1) or concealment loss (A12.141). Claiming/forfeiting WA can never be done between an enemy action being declared and that action being completed, e.g., fire vs the unit claiming WA.

I think if both sides of the Wall are Mandatory WA location, the side remaining in the original Location would gain the WA over the Withdrawing unit. I don't think the rule is that clear on this though. -- jim

The way that I read it (and I could be totally off the mark here), mandatory WA can only exist when the unit benefitting from it was in a position to claim WA in the first place. This normally happens when a unit is behind a wall in a zero TEM location with no ADJACENT enemy unit. Rather than have units place WA counters in that situation, they are simply assumed to have it automatically and don't place the counter until an enemy enters the location across the wall. In the situation posited by OP, we have two units in the same location, neither of which can claim WA for that very reason. When one unit withdraws to the other side of the wall, neither unit is in a position to claim WA (since neither of them had it in the first place) until the next player turn and the ATTACKER gets first dibs in the RPh.

IIRC, there is a Q&A that says who gets WA in a situation where one withdraws and both units normally have Mandatory WA.

I think the one not Withdrawing gets it.

I have looked but can't find anything in the obvious places!
