Reporting live from the chess.com tourny room!
Alright! Finally. I've been trying to check this feature out for a few weeks and it's finally going to happen. Was planning to start at noon today but I had some errands to run and they advise you to plan for 4-5 hours to play a so called "standard" tournament at 15/10 controls. I don't know...their standard seems pretty fast to me. I'm very used to 30/30, but have no idea how I'll play at 15/10. I expect to play horribly.
Just lost an embarrassing game against Chessmaster this afternoon and am going into this on a bit of a low. But hopefully, the lesson will stop me from playing a similarly bad game tonight.
So the way it works, is they automatically start a number of tourneys each hour at a set minute according to something similar to this schedule...
:00 = 10|0 Rapid Tournament (5 rounds = ~1.5 hrs)
:10 = 1|0 Lightning Tournament (9 rounds = ~20 mins)
:15 = 5|0 Blitz Tournament (7 rounds = ~1 hr)
:20 = 15|10 Standard Tournament (5 rounds ~4 hrs)
:30 = 3|0 Super Blitz Tournament (7 rounds = ~45 mins)
:40 = 1|0 Lightning Tournament (9 rounds = ~20 mins)
:45 = 5|0 Blitz Tournament (7 rounds = ~1 hr)
:50 = 2|1 Bullet Tournament (7 rounds = ~45 mins)
According to this, the standard tournaments start at the 20 minute mark of each hour. I'm logged in right now and it looks like they're actually starting 2 of them....one is ELO 1200-1600 and the other one is open, so conceivably you might get paired against a top gun.
Was hoping to get going at 6:20 but I've just ordered out for dinner and I don't want the delivery guy showing up while I'm playing. Sigh, it looks like 7:20 will be it, and I'll be busy 'til about 12:20. Tough schedule!
