Hi All – Just getting some time to do these RVs again and a good place to start is something new

Again – if you want to bag CH – please “get your own thread!” not mine

Big Picture :)
CH Annual 5 is divided into

Magazine (General articles, Linked Articles for the Scenarios within (25 contained) and Rules for planes of Arab-Israeli conflict and Helicopter rules updated

6 CH Boards (hist)-4 desert- 2 Normandy

3.5 counter sheets (Arab-Israeli conflict)

In Detail ?

Magazine ?

  • 5 pages of General Spiel – usual CH stuff…….Rays style is Rays style! – its like MMP mags and LFT mags now as well and full of “rules peekers” like a rule for medics!
  • 2 pages Sword Beach AAR – brief read and really just an overview
  • 5 pages article on the Israeli 7th Armoured Brigade that links to 6 Scenarios of the Brigade played on the 4 Historical Desert Boards provided so really an extended designers comment linked closely to the History of The Israeli Attack on Egypt on 5-8 June 1967 – a really enjoyable read to have the history and scenarios lined so well (I will comment on scenarios below as set a few up solo)
  • 5 pages article by Mr Holst (reaped from a previous Annual) linked to a scenario in Normanby (with the historical board included) – reading it for the second time I appreciated it even more – well written and love they way he dissects the scenario into bocage tactics – great effort!
  • 2 pages design notes for 3 scenarios set at Aug-Sept 43 post Kursk to do with the poles since it’s a real-life recollection story of what actually happened lined up with historical sources – nice read and linkage around why and where the scenarios fit in history
  • 5 pages Arab- Israeli aircraft rules and historical notes – as expected someone has done some very nice research – The simplified JSR – rules for jets in aircraft are supplied – very different to FW and I have never played air support in any of the FW scenarios so maybe I don’t know the actual difference
  • 6 pages of helicopter rules – I would take a few weeks to dissect them versus pervious – my solo play of helicopters is they are like Halftracks but basically ignore terrain and probably are weaker than I play them solo – a competitive game is needed for me here since I have read the rules too many times as they keep getting slightly tweaked and updated – I cant compare with MMP FW since I don’t think they have Helicopter rules (or the recent LFT product)

Counters

Sheet 1 – Helicopters and Jets (lots of different types as per the historical pages in the magazine)

Sheet 2 – More Israeli Vehicles (the scenarios do tend to have large numbers)- and the new CH acquired counters (there is a rule in the magazine that I have seen before on how to use these new counters compared to the older ones (idea is they are large- special – sit at bottom of stack and not like area ones)

Sheet 3 – More Arab Vehicles – plus guns plus a few playing counters

Sheet 4 – ½ - extra Israeli SAMs and play ability counters

Maps

AN1-AN4 – Desert boards that fit together in CH Map panel size for the Arab Israeli scenarios within

AN5 – a city (12 blocks) next to a River

AN6 – a hunk of Normandy

Scenarios ?

CHA-5 Bonus 1 – 15 June Normandy – using AN6 over 8 turns – 9.5 7-4-7s plus SWs and MTR81mm, reinforced by 3.5 7-4-7s and 2 x M4A1s (t2) attack and try and take multi-hex buildings (3-4 moves away) – defended by 9 Germ Sqds, 50L ATG, 75L ATG, 2 x 37L(8) AA – setting up solo say a simple game of bocage fighting – I would do a flank attack myself but some would do up the guts!

CHA-5 Bonus 2 – 29th July Roncey – Using AN6 over 9.5 Turns – 16 SS Sqds with sw, 2 x MKIVHs and 3 x Panthers (9-2 al) attack and try and exit (28EVPs) from the board (probably 5 moves) with – defending 10 US sqds with SWs and 2 x 57L ATGs reinforced on T3 by 8 US Sqds and 5 x M4A1s – Punch a holes and keep going since they get reinforced by tooooo much FP

?** Favourite Scenario ?CHA-5 Bonus 3 – Locquignol France 2 June 1944- Designed by Bob Davis (Congratulations!) – Straight out of Hogan Heroes!!! – (I set this up on VASL and loved it) – Basically an aircrew (represented by 10 leaders) get involved in 9 partisan squads trying to hold a bridge prior to D-Day – Basically the Germans are defending two MG posts (4 sqds and 2 x MMGs) and are reinforced by 4 more sqds (in trucks) and a Ht – just so cool and dinky as a game I kept playing it on VASL since it uses Bd 34 and Bd 32 over 7 turns and the partisans have to take and hold the bridge and rescue the CREW – I love these dinky ones – I am playing one in FrF83 at the moment that is so dinky as well!!!

?The next three Scenarios are Themed July 1919 – White Russians vs Red Russians using Bd AN5 a Russian City on the Volga – Then Jan using normal boards - I don’t play WWI so I am sorry I did not set these up

CHA-5 #1 – 24 White Russian Sqds with 4 x WWI tanks attack 12 Red Sqds in Trenches and 6 crews manning SW and 1 x 76*Art over 11 turns

CHA-5 #2 – 19 White Russian Sqds with 1 x WWI tank attack 12 Red Russian Sqds and 2 crews with a HMG and 76* Art over 10 turns

CHA-5 #3 – 20 Red Russians and 3 crews with HMGS attack on Bds 32, 42, 17, 35 – 15 White Russian Sqds and 6 crews manning HMGS and 2 x 84* Art reinforced by 8.5 sqds and 2 x Canadian? h/sqds on horses over 9 turns

?The Next Three scenarios are addressed by the designer in the magazine

CHA-5 #4 – 9 Sept 1939 Poland – Over 9 Turns using Bd 9,24,2- 17 German Sqds, 8 Light Tanks, 4 trucks attack 13 Polish Sqds (and SWs) and a 37L ATG with a 10-3 ldr with wire and rd blocks. Similar to SP048 Uhlands in an attack at a polish position but unique in two ways – attack at two edges not one and every dead polish sqds can cause the game to end where the 10-3 or next top ranking leader (if 10 -3 dies there is only an 8-1 and 7-0) takes a TC to end the game

CHA5- #5- 5 Aug 1944 Warsaw Airport – Over 9 Turns using Bd 14 – 17 Partisan Sqds with 4 DCs attach the airport garrison of 9 Germ Sqds with SWs and a 20L AA (6) and wire – Bit of a Box defence and need to cover any entry point since the partisans can come in form any connected two board edges – They have to spread out close to the airport – and Bd 14 has the airport in one corner so you can play these many ways as a partisan – thus many different variants

CHA5 - #6 – Post Kursk – 20 Aug 1944 Russia – Over 10 Turns using Bd 37, 7 and 5 – 26 Russian Sqds with 7 crews and lots of sws attack 10.5 Germ Sqds wit SWs reinforced T2 6 sqds, T5 10 Germ sqds with DCs and FTs – Again a very much a multiple possibility game – A bridge sits in the middle that you defend with the 10.5 sqds – The Large Russian force has many options to come on and there is incremental los representing attacking at Dawn – not night rules – The temptation was to attack from the South and its obvious since the North is where all these German reinforcements come from and if the bridge is lost it’s a completely horrible game for the Germans

?These Next Two Scenarios are just there with no link

CHA-5 #7 – Nov 1941 Northern Russian – Over 7.5 Night Turns using Bd 24 – 9 Russian 6-2-8s with 3 DCs attack a spread out German Mountain unit (struggles for freedom of movement NVR 2) of 10 sqds, 3 crews and 3 x 37L AAs (8) without their crews!!! – did not set this up looked complicated in tactics to play solo

CHA-5 #8 – Feb 44 Italy – Over 8 Night Turns on Bd 13 – Two aggressive patrols meet!! (have not seen this theme for a long time in ASL) – One is 3 x German 548s vs 3 Canadian 458s – They are trying to SET DCs 1 each to use and search buildings with 12 concealment counters each to do the fog of war – very dinky scenario

Cheers Rob ?

:giggle:The Next 4 Scenarios are additional Arab-Israeli ones (one breaching the peach in 1950 and then 3 to do with the 1956 Suez battles – including a French vs Egyptian) – They all use the 4 new Desert Historical Bds AN 1-4

As a note on the CH Arab Israeli scenarios my overall opinion regards playing in this theatre (now that I have setup solo many but still have yet to play an opponent due to delays in scanning the boards into VASL formats) is each periods has a feel for the armour (and that’s often the focus) and a feel for the infantry

?1956 Conflict

Egyptian Infantry are the 6-2-8, 4-5-8 and 4-4-7 but with more SWs, more Gun support of things like RCLs and 85L ATGs vs Israeli 6-4-8s and 5-5-8s but not a lot of special SWs – In the Desert this is like Elite Brits vs Elite Russians in the Desert – lots of huge FP

Egyptian Armour is got the Russian Red numbers for TH and the SU100 (TK 27) and T34-85 (TK 17) – often lots of them vs Israeli Armour – Basically Shermans (75 and 76L) and often lots of half-tracks and jeeps with the new AMX 13 – Panther Gun 75LL (TK 24) on lightly Armoured but fast MP20) AFV. So in the desert this is like having the usual US Sherman’s (though 76L better) and this nice 75LL fighting Russian who are end of WW2 gun calibres

?1967 Conflict

Egyptian Infantry are again 628s, 458s and 447s again with more SWs and more Guns and RCLs and now RPGs vs Israeli 748s – like US paratroopers, with specialised sws -IN the desert these are again elite Russian vs elite US (with lots of vehicles) –

Egyptian Armour (Red TH nos) are now upgraded to T54 100L (TK27), T55 122L (TK25) and T34-85 and SU100 with heat in massed numbers vs Centurions -84 LL (TK 20) or 105L (TK 21) and M48s – 90L (TK 21) - Jordanians have M48s – 90L – SO its like the Super tanks from the end of ww2 in the desert firing at each other over distance

?The Scenarios

CHA-5 #9 – Arava Valley – 30 Nov 1950 – Over 9.5 Turns on Bds AN1, AN 4, AN 2 – 17 Israeli sqds with 6 x Sherman’s, 10 Half-Tracks (HMG and MMG included), 4 Jeeps, 4 trucks and a 57L ATG attack over 3 boards the fortified Egyptian position of 14 Egyptian Sqds , 2 x 57LATG, 4 x ACs with Roadblocks, Wire, Trenches, AT mines and Sangars - On solo setup it’s the case of a very vehicle heavy force pushing over a defended position – a real FP type battle where multiple half-tracks team up to lay down heavy fire and the Sherman’s help overrun the position

CHA-5 #10 – Sinai 30th Oct 1956 – Over 9.5 turns on Bds AN1-4 – 12 Israeli Sqs with 13 x MX-13s and 14 x Half Tracks (including HMGs) attack a fortified position defended by 18 Egyptian sqds with lots of SWs , 3 x 82RCLs, 4 x 85L ATG, 3 x SU 100Ls with mines, Trenches, Bunkers and Revetments.

CHA-5 #11 – Egypt 5th Nov 1956 – Over 8 turns on Bd AN5 (city board) – 12 French Para (6-4-8s) with multiple SWs including DCs attack 12 Egyptian sqds with SWs ( 447 and 426) with 2 x SU100s – basically a simple slugfest in a city

CHA-5 #12 – Sinai 31 October 1956 – Over 11 Turns on Bds AN1-4 – Initial Israeli Recon – 3 Jeeps and 3 HS setup against 8 x T34-85s under concealment and then on T2 9 x AMX-13s, 7x Sherman’s followed by the Egyptians sending in 12 x T34-85Ls and 6 x 100Ls – Trick of Israeli in this one is keep the Egyptians far away where the 75LL has the advantage – when they come close they dominate the AMX-13 with its weak armour!

The next scenario is "Just Desserts" that is analysed in the article in the Mag by Scott Holst ? on Bocage

CHA- 5 #13 – Village of Le Desert France 11 July 1944 – over 10 turns on Bd AN6 – 20 German Sqds with 4 x Panthers, 4 x PZIV Hs and 2 x arm Hts (37L AA) attack 17 US sqds with 6 Sherman’s, 1 x 57ATG and 1 x 81mm MTR,

:geek:The next two scenarios are covering 2 x WW1 conflicts – Russians vs Turks – I don’t play WW1 so I did not set them up

CHA-5 #15 – Aradahan 27th Dec 1914 – on bd 10 and 21 – Over 8.5 turns, 18 Turish Sqds, 4 crews on horses and wagons wit 4 x 75mm ART attack a fortified position of 20.5 Russian Sqds, 5 crews with 3 MMGs and 3 x 76ART in Trenches

CHA-5 #16 – Sarakamish 27th Dec 1914 – on bd 17 and 16 – Over 11 turns, 18 Russian sqds, 6 crews with 3 MMGs and 2 x 107 ARTs attack 46 Turkish squads, 6 crews with HMGs and 3 x 87mm ART

?The last 7 Scenarios correspond to the article on the 7th Armoured Brigade and its fight in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war – as discussed above the feel of 1967 battles are different desert battles for ASL

CHA-5 #14 – Sinai 5 June 1967 – on Bd AN1 and AN 3 – over 8.5 turns – 12.5 Israeli sqds with DCs, FTs and BAZ 50s with 11 x 105L Centurions and 15 Half-Tracks including HMGS and 120mm armed attack a fortified Egyptian position of 12 sqds, 4 x RPGs, 2 x 82mm RCLS, 1 x 107 RCL 2 x 85L ATG, 3 x SU100s in trenches, wire, bunkers and mines reinforced by 10 x T34-85s on T3

CHA-5 #17 – Rafah Junction 5 June 1967 – On Bd AN4 and AN2 – Over 8 Turns – 6.5 Israeli Sqds, Baz, 1 x RCL 107 Jeep, 2 x normal Jeeps, 2 x 81mm Ht, 6 x normal Hts attacked an Egyptian fortified position of 6 sqds, 1 x 82 RCLs, 2 x RPGs in trenches, wire, bunkers, AT mines – Reinforced T2 by 3 x IS3-Ms and T3 by 8 x T34-85s – Israeli Tanks arrive T3 – 9 x 105L Centurions

CHA-5 #18 – Jiradi Defile – 5 June 1967 – On Bd AN 1-4 – Over 10.5 turns – A staggered ISralei attack – T1 5 x M48A1s, then T2 12 x 105L Centurions an 2 x 106 RCL jeeps, T3 11 x 748s – 4 x BAZ, 2 x DCs 10 x Half – Tracks (including HMG) attack an Egyptian fortified position with 14 sqds, 8 crews, 3 x RPGs, 1 x 82RCL, 2 x 85L ATG, 2 x 107RCL, 4 x SU100s with trenches, wire, bunkers and AT mines reinforced T2 with 8 sqds, 6x RPGs, 2 x SAMs 16 x T55s, 9 x T54s, 8x Troop carriers, 3 x Modern ACs

CHA- 5 #19 - Jiradi Defile – 6 June 1967 – On Bd AN 1-4 – Over 12 turns – 10 Israeli Sqds 1 x RCL 106 Jeep, 2 x Jeeps, 4 x M48s, 3 x 105L Centurions, 2 x Trucks, 3 x Half-Tracks – Reinforced by 5 x Israeli Sqds, 4 x BAZs 2 x DCs, 6 x Half-Tracks, 2 x MArkats (160mm), 3 x AMX-13, 6 x 84LL Centurions attacked Egyptians in defence including 5 sqds with 2 x RPGs reinforced by: T1 – 3 x amphib tanks (76L) + 10 x T55s, 3 x SU 100s; T3 5 sqds, 2 x RPGs, 1 x 82 RCL, 2 x halftracks, 2 x trucks, 3 x T10Ms and 4 x T34-85s; T5 3 sqds, 2 DCs and 3 x T34-85s.

I'm extremely interested in playing Arab-Israeli ASL and I've long since given up on MMP incorporating these conflicts in to a core module.

My question is, are the AIW contents within this periodical a 'stand alone' set of components or is there another product required to play? Where are the To Hit/Kill tables, rules, vehicle notes, etc.?

Nice review!

I think if you start with Genesis III (or even Genesis II) you will be able to play most of these AIW scenarios and all of the ones in Genesis. Big difference between Gen II and Gen III is the boards. Genesis II still uses regular AH/MMP geo boards. With Genesis III they move to all CH! Produced boards for that product and all other AIW modules. All good stuff!

Dear Yuri

No to stand alone - The boards are in the magazine but the QRDC, rules and Vehicle notes - please see this link
http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/index.php?threads/israel-goes-to-war-a-rv-of-the-ch-products-covering-this-topic.147850/#post-1937095

Its long but it talks about the products and where they reside - War of Liberation 1948-50, 56 war, 67 war, 82 etc - all different but progressively add to it

Still no VASL boards from Pete or Ray so I am still a solo player for these

Rob
Since that post referred to in the link was made CH has released several more modules, however, the only one that adds counters is Lebanon '82 which adds some of the later tanks like the Merkava. BTW - at one point CH indicated that someone was working on the Iraq Iran War or 1980.

Thanks for the link and the other info youse guys!
So, if I'm reading it correctly, I would first need to acquire Genesis III to play with the stuff in CH Annual 5. I hadn't heard about the '82 Lebanon intervention being covered in ASL... very interesting.

Getting quite interested in this stuff. Would love to have some T-54/T-55 counters and try some post war battles.
