Folks,

I have loaded vasl and can run it in offline mode just fine.

The problem is that it cannot (will not?) connect to the server when I go online.

I shut off wifi on my computer, and used my phone as a mobile hotspot (using mobile
data), and there is no issue.

I shut off the firewall. No luck there.

Under Firewall options, there is an option to allow incoming connections. I tried adding,
and chose vassal. No luck. "Automatically allow built-in software to receive..." is checked.

My ISP (Shaw, in Canada) claims they don't block stuff.

Your ideas would are appreciated.

Does it show any messages? And/or can you put the contents of the error log (from the main VASSAL window, help menu) into a post?

Hey Zoltan,

That's part of the frustration...after I click on "Look for a game online" the windows that should pop up do,
and in the main window all I get is this:

- Chatter font changed

-VASL version 6.5.0

After about 15 seconds, I get

- Unable to establish connection to server: Operation timed out (Connection timed out)

Not surprisingly, nothing appears in the Active Games or Current Game window.

Perhaps it's the version of VASL?

It looks like VASL is looking for VASSAL Legacy Server. The other option is
VASSALJabber Server.

Great...I may have outsmarted myself...

In VASSAL, it said I was running an old version. So I went to http://www.vassalengine.org and downloaded
VASSAL 3.3.1 for Mac OS X.

So far so good...drag and drop to Applications and...wait for it...

when I try to open VASSAL, I'm not getting

“VASSAL” cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified.
macOS cannot verify that this app is free from malware.

Safari downloaded this file today at 1:50 PM from github-production-release-asset-2e65be.s3.amazonaws.com.

Am I correct in thinking it's some certificate thing I don't have on my machine?

BTW, I'm running OS 10.15.3 (Catalina)...and used safari to download.

You need to go into System Preferences... Security & Privacy and then click the Open Anyway button that is there after you try to launch VASSAL.

Actually, you don't want VASSAL 3.3.1 if you're planning on playing VASL, VASL will not run on 3.3.1 yet. You need 3.2.17

Zoltan,

Argh! Thanks for that. I know I haven't been clear about this, so let me say thank you for your help.
I really appreciate it.

It turns out I had 3.2.17 all along!

I will keep you posted.

Is there any more after this?

You can try updating this to the latest version as a shot in the dark.
https://java.com/en/download/

latest build is update 251

Zoltan,

No, that was it...the update 251 didn't seem to work. The
last bit of the error log now says

Something does seem to be blocking your connection but I can't tell what it would be from the information you've passed so far. I can say with confidence that there shouldn't be any secret sauce to get VASL on the Mac to connect to the server though.

Open the console app and search for java. in the logs and see if there is a system error to point to why the app is being blocked

Gents,

Thanks for all of your replies. It turns out the issue was the router (the stupid router). I had rebooted it to no avail.

It turns out that I needed to unplug it completely from everything (power, coax in, connection out), buy it flowers,
and take it for dinner.

I should have thought of this a lot earlier. Sorry for taking up your time.
