Yes it does, as a DRM for its IFT atrack.

Defensive first fire ... cannister ... seems like a waste of ammo to nail one unit/stack.

Situation dependent.
Vs. a typical Japanese Banzai charge, canister could harm more than one hex.
And it hurts much more than a 37L HE shell.

I seem to recall that you cannot use Bore Sighting for Canister but I could not find anything in the rules.
Can anyone confirm or rectify, please?

Bore sighting grants a -2 to a TH Hit DR. (C6.4) "firing at a target in a Location it has Bore Sighted may add the -2 DRM of Case M..."
Canister does not require a TH DR (C8.4) "...A TH DR is not required..."
I would suggest this means 'you cannot'.
