BATTLE #1 - Meeting Engagement

BATTLE# 1
BATTLE LOCATION: 84 - (Modded to reflect Niger River Delta- Nigeria)
MISSION: Meeting Engagement
VISIBILITY: 23 (1150 meters)
LENGTH: 25 Turns

SUPPORT FORCES - (17 points)
F0) 120mm M43 Mrtr* (43)

Initial deployment is 1 platoon in the North with the remainder of the company in the center ready to advance on the village. The 120mm Mortar is kept in the rear just behind the platoon on the North where they have a view of most of the village itself should the company need close fire support.

BATTLE #1 - Turn 3

The advance continues.

In the North, D Platoon crosses the bridge, securing the VH's.

In the center the Scouts and RPG Team cross a small patch of marsh and move toward the Northern part of town while the rest of the company advances East, directly toward the village. Things go very slow due to the marshy ground conditions. West of the village, on the high ground the PKMS MMG and the 61mm Mortar take up positions to overwatch the rest of the company.

No enemy forces in sight so far.

BATTLE #1 - Turn 5

D Plt set ups to defend the recently captured bridge in the North. All 4 squads set up to cover the single bridge to the Southeast of their position (I am using the new Overwatch Filter) so that ALL 4 squads will target any movement within 1 hex of the targeted hex (within the Red circle). A Nigerian infantry force attempts to force the single hex bridge but is driven back by concentrated gunfire from D Plt.

In the center, the PKMS MMG and the 61mm Mortar take up overwatch on the small hill directly East of the village (also done using the new Overwatch Filter). The village itself is secured and the company begin to deploy into positions that will allow the best and interlocking fields of fire. Both 611mm and 120mm Mortar fire is called in on the Nigerian infantry forces advancing on D Plt. Hopefully it will arrive in the next turn or so and catch them in the open.

BATTLE #1 - Turn 11

In the far south, Nigerian troops finally appear and push back the lone Rebel squad guarding the bridge. The Nigerian attack in this area will soon threaten the whole southern flank of the Rebel position.

BATTLE #1 - Turn 16

In the center, the Nigerians have finally managed to advance past the bridge although D Plt has successfully blunted the main advance toward their positions in the north. By now, D Plt has begun to lose a considerable amount of men in the fighting with 2 squads retreating to the rear near the bridge they advanced across earlier. One of the remaining squads is down to 2 men and will probably be following along in the retreat soon.

In the south, the Nigerian advance continues. Only by diverting men from the center are the Rebels able to hold on and prevent them from reaching the outskirts of the village. Unfortunately those men are desperately needed in the center too.

BATTLE #1 - Turn 18

In the center the Rebels are hard pressed to contain the Nigerian advance. Most of the squads are at 1/2 strength with the HQ unit moving up to bolster the defenses. By this time all Rebel reserves have been pushed into the front and both mortars are firing non-stop along the river in an effort to stop the attack. Because the fighting is so close the HE rounds fall on both forces killing several rebels as well as Nigerians.

Fortunately, the Nigerian scouts in the south have been successfully engaged and almost eliminated.

Battle #1 - End Game

The battle ends with the Rebels scoring a Marginal Victory but at a cost of 61 men, almost 1/2 of their total force. Only the Headquarters, 7.62mm MMG and 61mm Mortar escape the fighting without casualties.

Fortunately the Rebels are able to replenish their losses bringing the company back to full strength before the next battle.

BATTLE #2 - Turn 2

Under cover of smoke and the overwatching MMG, D Platoon begins their dash across the bridge. Hopefully the Nigerians will be slow to arrive. The infantry of the Support Platoon takes the route south of the bridge though the jungle and swamp.

In the south the Rebel infantry trudges through the thick jungle unable to keep up while the BRDM-2's race ahead alone.

BATTLE #2 - Turn 5

In the north, the PT-76B advance with the Scouts loaded to block the Nigerians coming from the East. They deploy and take up defensive positions behind a small hill and wait.

In the center, D platoon with a supporting RPG7 Team runs headlong into an enemy force of at least 2 platoons. The fight is on at point blank range! Just to their south the other Rebels are working their way through the swamp and will be unable to support them for some time.

In the south, C Platoon is still working their way through the jungle while one of the BRDM-2's have become stuck in a small ditch right next to an objective hex.

BATTLE #2 - Turn 9

In the north, the PT-76 and scouts finally rout the small Nigerian force they encounter and begin to advance toward the bridge.

+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +

In the center, as the smoke clears and the Nigerians are able to concentrate their fire D Platoon begins to take heavy casualties and the RPG7 Team is eliminated. Only after incessant mortar fire and the arrival of both the Support Platoon and the remaining BRDM-2 are the Nigerians pushed back.
